UFC Medical Suspensions

John Dodson on the shelf six to seven weeks following broken hand at UFC on FOX 3

Photo

Despite his eagerness to get back into the cage and compete, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) flyweight contender John Dodson is taking a little vacation.

Not by choice, mind you.

"The Magician" pulled a broken hand out of his hat during his UFC on FOX 3 victory over Tim Elliott last Saturday night (May 5, 2012) at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, NJ.

As Dodson explains to MMA Weekly, the result is a six to seven week medical timeout.

"It happened in the first round. I re-watched it. It happened at like two minutes, 24 seconds into the fight, and I hit him with that overhand left and I tried to double up on it with two punches. I couldn’t make a fist anymore. I was trying to make a fist in my glove and it wasn’t working out too well. I even told Greg (Jackson) after the first, ‘I think I broke my hand.’ He goes, ‘punch him with it,’ and I was like 'cool.' I was trying to throw it, but it was a very sharp reminder, a very sharp painful reminder not to throw it. I already saw the doctor. They said I’m out for about six or seven weeks and I’ll be good."

Dodson (13-5) claimed The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 14 "six-figure contract," laying waste to Brandon Merkt, John Albert and Johnny Bedford. That set up a showdown against T.J. Dillashaw in last December's live finale, which he won in devastating fashion.

Now that he's claimed his first victory at 125 pounds, how long before he's knocking on the door of a title shot?

UFC on FOX 3 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Diaz vs Miller' in New Jersey

Photo

The New Jersey Athletic Control Board today issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC on FOX 3: "Diaz vs. Miller," which took place just last night (Sat., May 5, 2012) from the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

With several violent bouts on the card, there were quite a few fighters who were flagged for follow up visits to their doctors. In fact, 10 of the nights 24 competitors were suspended indefinitely.

Lavar Johnson was put on the shelf pending an X-ray of his left hand. You know, the one he used to club Pat Barry with until "HD" went crashing to the mat with the referee the only thing saving him from more damage. Despite his defeat, Barry was only given a 30 days suspension.

Also getting slapped with a significant vacations were co-main event fighters Johny Hendricks and Josh Koscheck, who battered and beat each other around the cage for three whole rounds spanning 15 minutes of back-and-forth action. Ultimately, "Big Rig" earned a split decision but both men will ride the pine pending eye exams.

But that's not all.

UFC 145 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Jones vs Evans' in Atlanta

That's an ankle. And it belongs to UFC 145's Mac Danzig, who nearly lost it to Efrain Escudero over the weekend. The good news is he toughed it out and went on to win the lightweight fight.

The Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission today issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 145: "Jones vs. Evans," which took place on Sat., April 21, 2012, from the Philips Arena in Atlanta.

With several violent bouts on the card, including Michael McDonald turning out the lights of Miguel Torres with a devastating first round knockout on the pay-per-view (PPV) main card, there were quite a few fighters who were flagged for follow up visits to their doctors.

Chief among them, however, is Mac Danzig, who is out indefinitely unless cleared by a physician after Efrain Escudero nearly snapped off his ankle with a heel hook on the "Prelims" portion of the mixed martial arts (MMA) event.

And he's the guy who won.

Also getting slapped with a significant suspension was Che Mills, who was completely outclassed and thrashed for 1.5 rounds courtesy of Rory MacDonald, who went on to earn a lopsided technical knockout in the co main event of the evening.

But that's not all.

UFC 144 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Edgar vs Henderson' in Japan

Ufcmedicalsuspensions_medium

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 144: "Edgar vs. Henderson," which took place on Sat., Feb. 25, 2012, from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

With no athletic commission to oversee the event, the UFC handles the medical suspensions and models its regulation practices in accordance with the standards set by Nevada and New Jersey.

With several violent bouts on the card, including Ben Henderson and Frankie Edgar kicking the crap out of each other for 25 minutes on the pay-per-view (PPV) portion of the mixed martial arts (MMA) event, there were quite a few fighters who were flagged for follow up visits to their doctors.

Cheif among them is Henderson, who is out for 180 days unless cleared by a physician for potential injuries to both his hands and his left foot after sending all of the above crashing into Edgar's skull during their lightweight championship main event.

And he's the guy who won.

Also getting slapped with a six-month suspension was Quinton Jackson, who once again needs to have his knee cleared by a doctor before he can return to action. Just forget about that whole testosterone thing.

But that's not all.

Ufcmedicalsuspensions_medium

The Nebraska State Athletic Commission today issued its list of medical suspensions for the UFC on Fuel TV: "Sanchez vs. Ellenberger" event, which took place on Weds., Feb. 15, 2012, from the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska.

Not much here to report.

Of the 18 fighters booked to throw down at the network-televised event, only four were given mandatory vacations when all was said and done (via MMA Weekly), including Ronny Markes, who busted up his hand in a split decision win over Aaron Simpson.

Markes will be riding the bench until his physician gives him the green light to continue.

Also earning some time off were Vagner Rocha, Phil De Fries, and Dave Herman, who were all finished by way of (T)KO in their respective bouts.

Ufcmedicalsuspensions_medium

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 143: "Diaz vs. Condit," which took place on Sat., Feb. 4, 2012, from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With several violent bouts on the under card, as well as Fabricio Werdum and Roy Nelson kicking the crap out of each other for 15 minutes on the pay-per-view (PPV) portion of the mixed martial arts (MMA) event, there were quite a few fighters who were flagged for follow up visits to their doctors.

Cheif among them is Werdum, who must be cleared by a physician for a leg injury -- one that most likely occurred kneeing Nelson in the face repeatedly -- or he won't be allowed to return until Aug. 3, 2012.

And he's the guy who won.

Ed Herman, Clifford Starks, Matt Riddle, Henry Martinez, Michael Kuiper and even poor Edwin Figueroa -- who got his balls smashed by Alex Caceres in their bantamweight bout -- also got slapped with six-month suspensions. Nick Diaz, who chased Carlos Condit for essentially 25 minutes, unsurprisingly, did not make an appearance on the final post-fight trauma report.

ouch

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation today (Feb. 1, 2012) issued its list of medical suspensions for those fighters competing at the UFC on Fox 2 event last Saturday night (Jan. 28, 2012) at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Chief among them is UFC light heavyweight Phil Davis, who has 45 days to think about what went wrong in his main event fight against Rashad Evans.

Joining him on the injured reserves is fellow main card fighter Chris Weidman, who huffed and puffed his way to a split decision win over Demian Maia. The "All American" received a mandatory vacation of 30 days for his efforts.

Also riding the pine for the next few weeks is heavyweight brawler Joey Beltran, who was put down by hard-hitting Strikeforce import Lavar Johnson.

But that's not all.

UFC 141 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Lesnar vs Overeem' in Las Vegas

Ufcmedicalsuspensions_medium

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 141: "Lesnar vs. Overeem," which took place on Fri., Dec. 30, 2011, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With several violent bouts on the card, including Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone kicking the crap out of each other for 15 minutes, there were quite a few fighters who were flagged for follow up visits to their doctors. Cheif among them is Diaz, who must be cleared by an ophthalmologist or he won't be allowed to return until June 28, 2012.

And he's the guy who won.

As for Cerrone, he's out until Feb. 14 due to a cut suffered to his lower lip. "Cowboy" is also under orders to avoid contact until Jan. 30. Considering his plans to go snowboarding, at least that contact won't come in training.

Not that it matters much now, considering he retired immediately after losing, but Brock Lesnar was hit with a long suspension, as he'll need to be cleared by a doctor or he's out until June. 28. That means if he changes his mind, he's going to have to visit his doctor first.

Alistair Overeem, the man who sent Brock into retirement, will ride the pine until Feb. 14 thanks to a small cut Lesnar opened above his eye.

But that's not all.

Here is the complete list of UFC 141 injuries and their medical instructions:
