With Lightweight champion, Conor McGregor, taking time off to spend with his growing family, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has created an interim 155-pound title to keep the division moving.
More on that here.
Top-ranked contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov (No. 1) and Tony Ferguson (No. 2) will collide at UFC 209, which takes place inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on March 4, 2017, in a match scheduled for five, five-minute rounds to determine who will next challenge McGregor for the undisputed belt once the trash-taking Irishman returns from self-imposed hiatus.
And no, Floyd Mayweather is not part of any meaningful conversation.
Yet.
Nurmagomedov (24-0) has pretty much had his way with the lightweight division, compiling eight straight wins under the UFC banner with four finishes. Ferguson (22-3), meanwhile, captured nine in a row and stands at 12-1 inside the Octagon.
