Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Conor McGregor shook up the combat sports community earlier this week by obtaining his boxing license from California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).
Why?
That’s a good question. Perhaps “Notorious” wants to test his might in the “sweet science” before securing a life-changing payday against Floyd Mayweather. Or maybe he just likes trolling the mixed martial arts (MMA) media.
Don’t ask promotion president Dana White, because he’s in the dark like everybody else.
“I have no idea what Conor is doing,” White told Yahoo Sports. “Conor’s Conor. He does his thing. But he’s under contract to me. Who knows with this guy? I just let Conor be Conor. And the other thing is, it’s fun to talk about this (Mayweather) fight and what might happen, but what commission would let that fight happen? Really, think about that.”
We are thinking about it (way too much).
McGregor captured the UFC lightweight title by stopping Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in New York. But the addition of a second belt to his collection forced White and Co. to ask for the 145-pound strap he won by creaming Jose Aldo at UFC 194.
And despite what Coach John Kavanagh said (read it), White insists it was McGregor’s idea.
“He’s misinformed,” he said. “Yeah, he doesn’t know all that has gone on, I guess. Do you think I just did this? This was Conor’s decision. There’s a logjam [at featherweight] and a lot of guys were [angry].”
Now we have an entirely new batch of guys who are angry (because of this).
