Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweights Abel Trujillo and Tony Sims came to blows last night (Jan. 2, 2016) at UFC 193 inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Trujillo entered this bout in great need of a victory, having lost his last two Octagon appearances. Luckily, he was paired off with a fellow knockout artist this time around, and he was looking to return to the win column in spectacular fashion.
Similarly, Sims was coming off a frustrating loss and really needed the win. This was also his first time on the main card of such a high-profile event, so the pressure was on the boxer to perform.
Sims opened the fight by circling and maintaining range, which allowed him to land some early counters on the lunging Trujillo. He also rejected a few takedown attempts, one of which was rather deep.
Then, everything went wrong for the boxer.
Ducking under a punch, Sims shot in for a slick double leg and landed it. However, he left his neck out, which Trujillo snatched up aggressively. Trujillo fell to his back and reversed Sims momentarily with a butterfly hook, allowing him to sink in the choke even deeper and finish it.
That was unexpected.
This is an interesting performance for Trujillo. It didn't last too long, but he looked out-matched on his feet and was having little success with his wrestling. However, he did a spectacular job capitalizing on his opponent's mistake with a quick submission.
It's actually an ideal victory for "Killa." Trujillo got a quick victory and a finish, but he can still learn a lot from this experience and work to patch up some of the holes in his game.
This was a much-needed victory for the Blackzilian. A similar match up in his next fight would make sense, perhaps against someone like Nick Hein.
It sucks to be Sims at the moment. He looked great and was clearly ahead, but a single mistake cost him dearly.
Sims' defensive jiu-jitsu was poorly executed throughout the scramble. He left his neck out and failed to adjust when his opponent attacked. Worse still, he actively made it worse by falling into the wrong side of side control, which makes the choke far tighter.
If he had simply kept Trujillo pinned to the fence, he would've been just fine.
Last night, Abel Trujillo locked up a quick submission win over Tony Sims. What's next for knockout artist?
