Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women's Bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey -- by now a household name -- took to ABC's long-running morning show "Good Morning America" to announce her next title defense today (Aug. 21, 2015).
In what was a shocker to most folks watching, "Rowdy" (12-0) threw a curve ball at the mixed martial arts (MMA) universe, stating that her seventh consecutive UFC title defense would come opposite fellow undefeated MMA fighter and former professional boxer Holly Holm (9-0).
The 135-pound tussle will take place Jan. 2, 2016, presumably in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the UFC 195 pay-per-view (PPV).
The decision by UFC brass to slot "Preacher's Daughter" opposite Rousey in the new year comes after the promotion's president, Dana White, declared that one-time women's bantamweight title challenger Miesha Tate would be inserted into a trilogy match with her rival.
"Cupcake" -- who had not yet heard the announcement because she resides on the west coast -- will be shocked to learn of the pending bout after her dismissal of Jessica Eye (highlights here) at UFC on FOX 16 last month and also because of her improved hands.
Holm, meanwhile, improved to 2-0 in the Octagon with a dominant performance over Marion Reneau at UFC Fight Night 71 in July.
Rousey destroyed Bethe Correia in 34 seconds (highlights here) for her latest title defense at UFC 190 earlier this month.
