So let me see if I have this right.
Former Strikeforce featherweight champion Cristiane Justino is a cheating piece of shit, but former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion Anderson Silva -- who also tested positive for steroids -- is a great guy who simply made a mistake.
Right, got it.
The world's largest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion issued a statement on Silva after "The Spider" was suspended for one year and fined $380,000 for failing a couple of drug tests in the wake of his win over Nick Diaz at UFC 183, which was recently changed to a no contest.
From UFC.com:
Following the Nevada Athletic Commission's hearing today, Anderson Silva is required to serve a 12-month suspension from competition, retroactive from his last fight on January 31. At the conclusion of his suspension, Silva must present a clean test upon reapplication of a license before his next fight in Nevada. The UFC organization maintains a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents by its athletes, and fully supports the Commission's ongoing efforts to ensure clean competition by all MMA athletes.
UFC recognizes Silva's great career and looks forward to his return to the Octagon in 2016.
Silva tried to fight the charges at last Thursday's circus hearing (full report here), but the commission -- who called the testimony "hokey" -- wasn't impressed with his defense. The Brazilian claims he accidentally ingested a boner-boosting supplement that he got from a friend in Thailand.
Sounds legit.
In any event, the earliest we'll see Silva back inside the cage is next February, just a couple of months before his 41st birthday. It will be interesting to see how the promotion matches him up, as well as how "The Spider" is received by combat sports fans.
