Joseph Duffy is the real deal!
Or at least he certainly looked that way Saturday afternoon (July 18, 2015), defeating veteran Ivan Jorge at UFC Fight Night 72 inside The SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland.
Duffy, famously the last man to defeat Conor McGregor (watch him do it here), gave Brazilian Ivan Jorge everything he could handle in the 3:05 minutes the fight lasted (fight recap here).
After a series of encounters on the feet, Duffy landed an absolutely vicious knee to the sternum followed up by a combination that had Jorge lunging for a takedown. Duffy, however, was having none of it, shrugging off the takedown before pressing forward again.
Jorge changed levels with 2:15 remaining in the first round to grab a body lock and push Duffy up against the cage to gain leverage for a takedown. The plan seemed to succeed momentarily but as the two were falling Duffy grabbed an arm and secured a slick triangle choke on the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.
The tap came at 3:05 into the very first round, giving Duffy his ninth career submission win and improving his overall record to 14-1 (2-0 UFC).
Duffy retired from MMA in 2011 after losing for the first time to Ivan Musardo via guillotine choke in the fourth round of their CWFC Lightweight Championship bout. But, he returned last August and has since put together four wins, all by way of the finish.
Welcome back, Joe!
Jorge meanwhile falls to 26-5 (2-2 UFC), dropping his very first submission loss in a career that began in 2001.
