After more than two years licking his various wounds, Cain Velasquez came to Arena Ciudad in Mexico City, Mexico, tonight (Sat., June 13, 2015) to lick Fabricio Werdum and make his Heavyweight championship whole again.
Mission failed.
Both fighters refused to touch gloves and they came out swinging as Velasquez landed a leg kick and Werdum a left hand. Velasquez continued to turn up the pressure along the cage, drilling the Brazilian with punches and knees. Werdum worked his way out eventually, but Velasquez -- bleeding under his eye -- scored a quick takedown before letting him back to his feet.
Velasquez went right back after him, but Werdum fired back with shots of his own, eventually picking up his leg and tossing him to the floor. Velasquez got right back up and went to work along the cage before the fight drifted back to the center of the Octagon.
Werdum charged in with a combination, forcing Velasquez to close the distance. Velasquez dumped him to the mat again and then let him back up ... again. Werdum landed a nice right hand and Velasquez responded with a sweet uppercut at the buzzer.
Velasquez opened up the second with more leg kicks, while Werdum snuck in a clean left hook. Another combination, and a left uppercut, found their marks for Werdum moments later. Regardless, Velasquez continued to charge forward undaunted.
In a scramble, Werdum landed a short right hand that appeared to daze Velasquez. He then landed several more clean shots as Velasquez's head bobbled from side-to-side. He refused to go down though, firing back even though he didn't appear to be all there.
Werdum landed a knee and then another shot that wobbled Velasquez again, but he continued to keep coming. More combinations from Werdum -- and then a vicious knee in the clinch -- floored Velasquez with about 10 seconds to go in the round. He landed another one before the bell as Velasquez staggered back to his corner.
Werdum got the action started with some nice jabs, but Velasquez wasted little time getting him down to the canvas. Velasquez eventually let him up and landed a nice head kick that backed up Werdum, but did not stop him from attempting a guillotine choke along the fence.
Velasquez escaped, but the next one he would not. As Velasquez sloppily dove in for another takedown, Werdum wrapped his arms around his throat, sat back and forced him to tap for the first time in his career.
Wow, what a clinical performance from Werdum -- he beat him in all areas ... bad.
There can only be one!
