Mismatch.
Carla Esparza attempted to defend her women's Strawweight title last night (Sat., March 14, 2015) against Polish Muay Thai champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in the co-main event of UFC 185, which took place inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
She failed ... terribly.
Jedrzejczyk, much taller and stronger, put her stamp on "Cookie Monster" from the opening bell, punishing her for an unsuccessful takedown attempt and then never letting her foot off the gas pedal. Esparza was clearly outclassed in the stand up department, but she could not compensate by getting the fight on her terms on the mat.
Indeed, Jedrzejczyk did a brilliant job sprawling and brawling her way en route to a brutal second round finish. It was, at times, difficult to watch -- Esparza ate a ton of hard, clean shots. To her credit, though, she hung around longer than she probably should have.
Nonetheless, it was a completely lopsided beatdown. And Esparza will have to deliver a way more spirited effort her next time out to warrant a rematch with the new queen of the ladies 115-pound perch.
She's savage.
