Mixed martial arts (MMA) loose cannon, Rousimar Palhares, was stripped of his welterweight title and suspended indefinitely by World Series of Fighting (WSOF), thanks to a mental lapse during his championship showdown against Jake Shields on NBC Sports.
In addition, "Toquinho" will face disciplinary action from Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), which already doled out its obligatory slap on the wrist to Shields. As for the Brazilian, he has no interest in returning to the Ray Sefo-led fight promotion.
And WSOF shouldn't plan on getting its belt back, according to Palhares (via MMA Fighting):
"Unfortunately, I'm still under contract with them so I can't do anything but stay quiet. They took my title, but the belt is still here and no one will take it away from me. They can say whatever they want about me as a person, but they can't take away my merit of being the champion. They didn't want to talk about anything before the commission's hearing, but I'm not interested in fighting for them," he said. "I asked to be released from my contract or fire me, but they won't. I wanted them to release me so I can go my way, I don't want to be part of this organization anymore. They didn't appreciate me."
WSOF didn't appreciate Palhares. Right, got it.
With the Brazilian put out to pasture, Jon Fitch and Yushin Okami will collide for the vacant 170-pound strap at the upcoming WSOF 24 event on Oct. 17, 2015, which takes place inside Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.
