With all the Light Heavyweight No. 1 title contender marbles on the line, Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Johnson collided last night (Sat., Jan. 24, 2015) in the main event of UFC on FOX 14 from Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
And it was amazing.
Johnson completely overturned the applecart. He smashed it into smithereens, actually, blasting Gustafsson mercilessly for two minutes until the referee had seen enough and waived off "Rumble." Indeed, Johnson shocked Gustafsson, silenced the roaring hometown crowd and punched a ticket to fight Jones later this year for his world title.
And he did it all in 135 seconds.
Gustafsson played a dangerous striking game early and paid dearly for it -- Johnson is a heavy hitter. Nonetheless, Gustafsson traded punches in the first exchange, and the after a quick break to check an accidental eye poke, he got plastered with a straight right hand.
It was all down hill from that point for the Swede, who could not escape Johnson's attack. And the referee gave him every opportunity to continue, but it was clear that Gustafsson was completely out of it.
And a big money pay-per-view (PPV) rematch for which mixed martial arts (MMA) fans had clamored since their epic scrap at UFC 165 back in Sept. 2013.
Oh well.
