Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is expected to crown a new light heavyweight No. 1 contender when Alexander Gustafsson collides with Anthony Johnson in the UFC on FOX 14 mixed martial arts (MMA) event, scheduled for Saturday night (Jan. 24, 2015) inside the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
But let's not forget about Phil Davis.
"Mr. Wonderful" faces off against Ryan Bader in the UFC on FOX 14 co-main event, and believes that impeccable timing -- and perhaps a little bit of luck -- could land him the next shot at reigning 205-pound champion Jon Jones, and that could be bad news for "Bones."
"I'll get [Jones] down and keep him down," Davis told MMA Fighting. "That is a fact. Put me on the record. I can get down anybody in the world."
Sure, he was 0-8 in takedown attempts against Johnson last May, but let's not nitpick.
Naturally, none of this matters if Davis is unable to get past Bader, who has title hopes of his own. And let's not forget that Davis was also shut down by Rashad Evans in 2012. As talented as he is in the wrestling department, he's still far below the curve in terms of striking.
But hey, if he can get Jones down and keep him there, it may not even matter.
