Back on May 3, Marcos Maidana gave pound-for-pound boxing great Floyd Mayweather his toughest fight in a number of years, at least dating back to the Miguel Cotto showdown, and even that wasn't in doubt, not really. The Argentine's performance -- he lost, but by majority decision -- earned him an immediate rematch, which took place tonight (Sat., Sept. 13, 2014) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Different night, same result.
This time, Mayweather earned a unanimous decision victory on scores of 115-112, 116-111, and 116-111. Maidana had even less success this time around, scoring a hard punch at the bell in the third round -- one that actually wobbled "Money" and had him woozy just before hitting his stool -- and following that up with an overwhelming fourth round flurry of punches.
But Mayweather was elusive for most of the 12-round affair, avoiding any damage while dishing out clean, hard shots to the body, a perennially underrated aspect of his game. By the end, he was dishing out shots to the head before coasting in the final frame.
There was a glove bite controversy in the eighth frame, but it certainly didn't appear to have any bearing on the remainder of the bout, even if Mayweather claimed he was battling through a numb hand.
