Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion and clean-sport crusader, Georges St. Pierre, asked the judge for leniency when sentencing his "good friend" and fellow Canadian, Jimmy Cournoyer, after the "King of Pot" plead guilty to drug trafficking.
Considering the minimum sentence was 20 years, getting 27 doesn't sound that bad.
Cournoyer, who moved more than 200,000 pounds of pot into the U.S. with help from the Hells Angels and the Bonanno crime family, could be eligible for parole in just seven years, if he is allowed to serve his sentence in Canada, according to a report from NY Daily News.
He is, however, required to serve at least one-third of his sentence in the U.S. before he can apply for a transfer.
St. Pierre was criticized by mixed martial arts (MMA) fans for siding with the drug kingpin and "Rush" later apologized, but candidly told his supporters he didn't want to abandon a friend in need and believes everyone should have a chance at "redemption."
