Chael Sonnen is not going to just roll over when he fights Andre Galvao at Metamoris 4.
Despite being outmatched -- at least in terms of grappling credentials -- the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) contender is going to fight tooth and nail for the entire duration of their 20-minute showdown. Heck, even surviving the match would be something of a moral victory.
But don't expect him to pull a Brendan Schaub, according to his coach Fabiano Scherner (via MMA Fighting):
"I don't believe the fight will go that way because Chael refuses to do an ugly fight. He will go straight forward against Galvao. He's training for a 20-minute fight, a good fight, not like what Schaub did against ‘Cyborg.' Chael likes to be a showman. Sometimes he just doesn't care much if he loses since he has a good performance. He wants to do his best and do a good fight, and he has to fight if he wants to do that, he can't hide. There no points and he's fighting the best grappler in the world today, and Galvao always goes for submissions, so Chael doing 20 minutes without being submitted... It's hard to call it a win, but for the facts involved, it wouldn't be a good result for Galvao. But I can't call it a win for Chael. It will depend on how the fight goes. Schaub wasn't submitted by ‘Cyborg,' but it was a horrible fight."
Indeed.
Schaub fought "Cyborg" Abreu at Metamoris 2 in June 2013, in a match that was so awful -- thanks to "The Hybrid's" stalling -- that founder Ralek Gracie completely revamped the rules (more on that here). Sonnen will be forced to engage but with "The American Gangster's" size advantage, this bout may not be the "gimmie" some experts are predicting.
Metamoris 4 takes place on Aug. 9, 2014 in Los Angeles, California (watch their "Countdown" video here).
