Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bantamweight kingpin Dominick Cruz will finally make his Octagon return when he battles fellow World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) import Takeya Mizugaki at the upcoming UFC 178 pay-per-view (PPV) event, scheduled for Sept. 27, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
ESPN.com brought word of the match up earlier today.
It will be nearly three years since Cruz (19-1) last saw action, thanks to a couple of devastating knee injures, followed by a bum groin. In fact, the last time "The Dominator" was in action, Demetrious Johnson was still a bantamweight, and Ronda Rousey was still fighting on Strikeforce "Challengers" cards.
And Team Alpha Male now owns the 135-pound title.
Mizugaki (20-7), meanwhile, has very quietly put together a five-fight winning streak, including a unanimous decision win over Francisco Rivera at UFC 173 back in May. The Japanese veteran has also endured his share of injuries, including a recent surgery to reattach his ear.
Sounds like fun.
UFC 178 will be headlined by the light heavyweight championship rematch pitting Jon Jones against Alexander Gustafsson. Elsewhere on the card, Streaking contenders Tim Kennedy and Yoel Romero go to war in the middleweight division.
Stay tuned for more UFC 178 fight card announcements in the coming days.
