Tonight's (Sun., July 6, 2014) The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 19 Finale in at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, broadcast live on Fox Sports 1, featured the crowning of the next two Ultimate Fighter winners from the latest season of the long running reality television show.
In the middleweight final, Team Frankie Edgar members Eddie Gordon and Dhiego Lima hooked 'em up not long after it was announced the latter earned a $25,000 bonus for "Submission of the Season". He could not, however, follow that up with a $100,000 contract (he'll probably put pen to paper on a deal anyway, of course), as he was knocked out after a series of clubbing blows in the very first round.
Unfortunately, one or two of those blows appeared to hit on the back of the head, with at least one seemingly targeted specifically for that area. No foul was called and it was only mentioned in passing on commentary and not brought up at all in the post-fight interview.
Enjoy that new Harley Davidson motorcycle, glass trophy, and UFC contract, though!
In the light heavyweight final, the inexperienced Corey Anderson (that's self admitted, though he claims it makes him more dangerous) battled his teammate on the show, Matt Van Buren. There was no love lost between the two, but they were cordial touching 'em up before the start.
Then Anderson absolutely blitzed Van Buren, unloading a series of punches -- something like Gordon earlier in the night but all totally legal -- and after Van Buren absorbed enough damage and wasn't intelligently defending himself, the referee stepped in to stop it.
UFC President Dana White called this the "worst season of The Ultimate Fighter in history", but the two tournament finals delivered first round knockouts that had him downright giddy to hand out trophies and contracts and Harley Davidson's.
