Weidman shot in for a takedown much earlier in this round, though Machida easily shrugged it off. He fired off with a high kick that was blocked. Lyoto sprawled to avoid another takedown attempt, this one lame.
He couldn't avoid the third.
The boo birds quickly started chirping thanks to a lack of action on the mat. Weidman attempted to take Machida's back but the Brazilian used an arm to get free. They reset standing and the champion started throwing combinations.
A big right hand landed and "The Dragon" was suddenly bloody.
Another big right hand came. A left hand was right behind it.
Machida went to the body with a knee but only when Weidman was diving in for a takedown that he completed. Machida managed to get up but only long enough for Weidman to take him down again.
Lyoto's blood staining the mat.
When he got back up, his face was crimson. The champion was asserting his dominance.
