Weidman vs. Machida live blog, Round 5

Weidman tried to shoot in for a takedown early but Machida threw a leg kick. The challenger took control of the center of the cage as the champion was backed up and looking for an opening.

Weidman fired off with a right but Machida answered with a big left counter in response. The American failed on a takedown and Lyoto made him pay with punches on the way back up.

A hard right hand from the champ looked to stun "The Dragon". He continued throwing and landing shots, stealing back the momentum Machida nabbed in the fourth.

Instead of backing down, Machida came in and threw caution to the wind. He ate a hard elbow for his troubles, one that wobbled him and had him bleeding even worse. He didn't care. He was in the pocket for more.

Weidman stepped out and somehow mustered the energy to complete a takedown with under two minutes left in the round.

Weidman took Machida's back and flattened him out with 50 seconds remaining. Lyoto got out and managed to stand up with 30 seconds remaining.

That's all that was left for him to land that hail mary.

So he came in blasting with shots and shots and shots and shots but Weidman absorbed them all to get to the horn.

Wow.

Weidman vs. Machida live blog, Round 4

Neither fighter looked particularly tired to start the fourth. Machida fired off kicks to the body but Weidman was the Terminator in his pursuit of controlling the pace of the action, not to mention the positioning. He was making sure it always looked as though Lyoto was bailing out while he was coming in.

Even when "The Dragon" was connecting, and he was early on here.

Weidman dipped low for a takedown but the Brazilian expertly avoided it. Back standing, he landed a hard left hook. Weidman stayed steady in the pocket but another left hand had him backing up for the first time in the fight.

A flurry had the champion against the fence. Machida went back to the body with kicks. He pushed Weidman against the fence and continued firing away with a varied offense. His volume was fairly low, however, and the champ appeared to recover as time wore on.

A lame takedown attempt on the challenger was stifled.

Signs of fatigue were glowing bright. Weidman shot in but Machida stuffed it again. He rushed Weidman unexpectedly and landed a huge left hand that stunned the champ at the buzzer.

Here we go for the fifth and final round.

Weidman vs. Machida live blog, Round 3

Weidman shot in for a takedown much earlier in this round, though Machida easily shrugged it off. He fired off with a high kick that was blocked. Lyoto sprawled to avoid another takedown attempt, this one lame.

He couldn't avoid the third.

The boo birds quickly started chirping thanks to a lack of action on the mat. Weidman attempted to take Machida's back but the Brazilian used an arm to get free. They reset standing and the champion started throwing combinations.

A big right hand landed and "The Dragon" was suddenly bloody.

Another big right hand came. A left hand was right behind it.

Machida went to the body with a knee but only when Weidman was diving in for a takedown that he completed. Machida managed to get up but only long enough for Weidman to take him down again.

Lyoto's blood staining the mat.

When he got back up, his face was crimson. The champion was asserting his dominance.

On to the fourth.

Weidman vs. Machida live blog, Round 2

It was slow rolling to start the second. Machida threw a front kick that missed before circling around again. Weidman pushed forward like his corner told him to because, well, they wont' score it for the Brazilian if he's moving away and avoiding offense.

So that's what the champion did, even doing some chasing so he could control the center of the cage. He landed with a hard right but Machida answered with a hard kick to the body.

"The Dragon" tried a leaping right hand but missed. Weidman came back with a jumping front kick that also missed. Still, he was firmly established in the middle of the cage, firing off jabs, always coming forward.

With one minute left in the round, Weidman shot in and earned a takedown. This brought on another "U-S-A" chant. Weidman answered that with ground 'n' pound before Machida stood up to end the round.

The champion taking control.

Weidman vs. Machida live blog, Round 1

A "U-S-A" chant broke out before they could even get underway.

When they did, Weidman opened with kicks, one low, one high, then one low again. Then he was pushing with kicks and it seemed clear he wanted to gauge the distance and keep Machida at bay.

About one minute in, a chant for Machida broke out, so never let it be said an American crowd isn't fickle.

Like he always seems to be, "The Dragon" was patient, hanging back and avoiding any of the champion's offense. When he finally engaged, it was a kick to the body that Weidman used to attempt a takedown.

One he couldn't complete.

Countering striking followed. Weidman pressured while Machida circled away. He countered a low kick with a hard straight left hand. He was getting the timing down and sneaking in with shots but missing on his counters.

The first round came to a close with both guys looking for an opening but failing to find one.

It's close.
