After another set of fights, it's time to match up the winners.
UFC on FOX 12: "Lawler vs. Brown" took place this past Saturday night (July 26, 2014) from SAP Center in San Jose, California, and in the main event, Robbie Lawler beat Matt Brown by unanimous decision to earn a second shot against Johny Hendricks.
It may not have been the explosive first-round finish most observers were expecting, but their battle turned out to be a solid headlining fight full of power punches, body shots, and everything in between.
In the co-main event, Anthony Johnson proved he's one of the most dangerous light heavyweight competitors in the world after blitzing through Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and scoring a knockout in just 44 seconds.
Also victorious in California was Dennis Bermudez and Bobby Green.
Without further ado, let's match them up.
Winner: Bobby Green
Who He Should Fight Next: Donald Cerrone
Why They Should Fight: In last week's edition, it was noted that had Thomson won against Green, he would have been the perfect match up for "Cowboy."
But, it was also stressed that if Green got the victory in his foe's hometown, he deserved the big fight, as well.
Weeks after his brother was murdered, the former Strikeforce combatant edged the "Punk" via split decision, and despite the fight being slightly awkward when it came to action, "King" was able to rack up his seventh consecutive victory, and you can't doubt him a top five opponent after his victory.
With Khabib Nurmagomedov out, it makes all the sense in the world for Cerrone to exchange head kicks against Green while the latter trash talks him.
Winner: Dennis Bermudez
Who He Should Fight Next: Ricardo Lamas
Why They Should Fight: As much as it makes a bit of sense to pit Bermudez against Chan Sung Jung based on the explosiveness we'd see in the potential contest, the "Menace" should be matched up against someone who has won his previous fight.
Lamas was a decent choice after his UFC Fight Night 44 victory over Hacran Dias (even if it wasn't all that convincing), and if Bermudez wants to escalate to top contender status, beating a former title challenger could get him there.
With Frankie Edgar being a good fit for Cub Swanson (unless the latter gets a title fight at the end of the year, which would put him out of action for a while), the "Korean Zombie" would actually match up well against Guida, so Bermudez vs. Lamas could very well happen.
There, we did the math for you.
Winner: Anthony Johnson
Who He Should Fight Next: Winner of Ryan Bader vs. Ovince St. Preux at UFC Fight Night 47
Why They Should Fight: The light heavyweight division isn't what it once was, and it could be one of the weakest divisions out there when it comes to the separation between contenders and those at the bottom of the barrel.
It's difficult to match someone like "Rumble" against another top foe, since Jon Jones will battle Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson will be nursing an injury for who knows how long.
That leaves Bader vs. St. Preux, which takes place in mid August, and the winner of that fight seems like the ideal choice for the rising Johnson.
You got any better options?
Winner: Robbie Lawler
Who He Should Fight Next: Johny Hendricks
Why They Should Fight: This one is obvious, since "Ruthless" emerged victorious in the title eliminator bout this past weekend and set up his rematch against the reigning welterweight champion when "Bigg Rigg" recovers from surgery.
It should be as hotly contested as their first affair, where Lawler almost edged the champion had he won another round back at UFC 171. After seeing Lawler's performance last night, does he have a better shot at acquiring gold, or is it an easier fight for Hendricks?
That just about does it.
