(Mini) Mania Meetup and UFN 45 post-fight thoughts

So, five maniacs were in attendance to see Cowboy beat the brakes off of Jim Miller. Actually, one was forced to drop out, and two others never got involved in the plan making process.

That just left the drunk and the child.

Arriving an hour before the fights started, I texted Joben to no answer. Forty-five minutes later, our commissioner had yet to respond. I wasn't particularly worried; I knew around where his seats were and figured he was simply too busy drinking to answer the phone.

Regardless, 15 minutes before the first fight, I get a call from a random phone number from Alabama. I answer, and it just so happened to be Joben, explaining something about how he had to get another phone. I didn't hear the exact situation -- UFC events are quite loud -- but I counted approximately nine "Fucks."

After a couple more calls, we agreed to meet up after the chick fight ended. Immediately after the third round ends and Gadelha walks around with her hands raised, my phone starts buzzing.

"That was the worst fucking fight ever!"

I laugh and then start walking to the bar, where Joben is. Naturally, we immediately dove into a discussion about MMA, training, charities, this community and other things. During this time, we accidently missed Cedeno hurting Sander's knee.

Whatever.

Anyway, Joben is awesome and much warmer than his ruthless Internet tactics would imply. His only request was that "I can't be smiling" in the picture we took. His face looks exactly the same in all of the pictures, so it is what it is.

Both Joben and I met a legend at separate times.

PROOF!

Now, here's my post-fight thoughts:

  • Sterling is a very solid prospect, and I expect him to reach the top ten eventually. His crazy kicks are gonna get him clipped one of these days though.
  • Leslie Smith might be my new favorite chick fighter, simply because she got me out of watching Jessamyn fucking Duke for fifteen minutes... AGAIN!
  • Healy deserved to win the decision, but I didn't expect him to. One takedown > getting outstruck for the majority of the round. Such is MMA. Regardless, Healy has had a tough run in the UFC, but name a non-top 15 fighter who would do better than 1-4 against Miller, Khabib, Green, Masvidal, and Tibau.
  • White has power, but he's either really slow or doesn't judge range well. He missed and got countered by a fighter with poor defense over and over. Still, pretty fun fight with a nice KO.
  • Lineker vs Ozkilic was a bangfest. What more is there to say?
  • Salas fought like an idiot and was still winning. Then, trying to swing for the knockout repeatedly finally got him caught. Salas has the skills to be a really good fighter, but that dude's fight IQ is horrific.
  • On the other hand, Story fought intelligently and easily owned that Brazilian. Story may not be stringing wins together, but he hasn't lost by anything other than split decision since 2012. "The Horror" IS still a top welterweight.
  • Barboza might be the most dangerous kicker in MMA. It sucks that his defensive boxing is so weak, but he's going to be in fun fights for a very long time.
  • Cerrone smashed Miller. It's always fun when a fighter does EXACTLY what I recommend in one of my breakdowns (in this case, it was the step knee to the body and teep kick, which nearly finished Miller).

All in all, it was a great night of fights, and I still can't pick events I attend for shit.
