A lot of crazy things could start happening in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight division, depending on whether or not current champion, Jose Aldo, can recover from his latest neck injury to meet the unofficial deadline handed down by Lorenzo Fertitta.
If he can't, the promotion would consider an interim title fight that pits division number one contender, Chad Mendes, against Cub Swanson, or perhaps even Frankie Edgar, depending on how much stock matchmaker Joe Silva puts in the "official" UFC rankings (see them here).
And should Edgar get left out in the cold, he's not opposed to exploring other options, like a possible "super fight" against former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) featherweight kingpin Urijah Faber, who now competes at 135-pounds.
From his conversation with Bloody Elbow:
"I want to fight either [Cub Swanson or Chad Mendes], whether it's interim or not interim, because they're the path to the title. To be honest, the interim title is nothing to me. I want a real title, but if it does take fighting for an interim belt, I'm all in. 135 might be a stretch, but I think I could do 140. I probably could make 135, but I don't know how well I would perform or how my body would feel. 140 is much more ideal for me, and if the right situation arises, I could see that fight [against Urijah] happening."
Where you at, Mike Dolce?
The good news is, Faber has already left the door open for a return to featherweight, but insists it would have to be for the right opponent. And as luck would have it, he specifically named Edgar as one of the select fighters to get him there, because "The Answer" is a "huge fight" for the fans.
See Faber's comments on that fantasy fight here.
As of now, it's impossible to play matchmaker, as we don't yet know what Aldo is going to do or when he's going to do it. There are several options available, as stated above, but would something like Edgar vs, Faber appeal to you as a fight fan?
