Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women's bantamweight number one contender, Cat Zingano, will put her spot in the division pecking order up for grabs against the dangerous Amanda Nunes at the upcoming UFC 178 pay-per-view (PPV) event, scheduled for Sept. 27, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Yahoo Sports brought word of the pairing earlier today.
Zingano (8-0) hasn't seen action for over a year, thanks to a devastating knee injury that came in the wake of her technical knockout win over Miesha Tate in April 2013. Not only did it cost her a coaching gig on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 18, it also saw her guaranteed title shot go up in smoke.
"Alpha" didn't lose her place in line, but now the champion is dealing with her own set of injuries and won't return until the end of the year.
So much for that UFC 176 "Hail Mary."
Nunes (9-3), meanwhile, has been red hot since making her Octagon debut last August, scoring back-to-back technical knockout victories over Sheila Gaff at UFC 163 and Germaine de Randamie at UFC Fight For The Troops 3. "Lioness" has finished all nine of her wins.
This is going to be a very interesting fight.
UFC 178 will be headlined by the light heavyweight championship rematch pitting Jon Jones against Alexander Gustafsson. Elsewhere on the card, Streaking contenders Tim Kennedy and Yoel Romero go to war in the middleweight division, while Dominick Cruz makes his UFC return against Takeya Mizugaki.
