Mark Munoz has been pulled from the "official" rankings.
That's because the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight is no longer under contract with the world's largest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion, following a submission loss to Gegard Mousasi at the UFC Fight Night 41 event last month in Berlin, Germany (results).
Mark Munoz has been removed from UFC rankings because he is not under contract. Mousasi bout was last on his deal. In talks for a new deal.— Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) June 9, 2014
The loss was his second straight and third of his last four contests.
That said, "The Filipino Wrecking Machine" is still 18-5 overall and was previously ranked at No. 9. And while he's been lit up in recent fights, it's important to note that his previous two losses (before Mousasi) came against Chris Weidman and Lyoto Machida, the two best middleweights in the world.
It's not like he's been getting crushed by cans.
Still, without a strong finish, Munoz will likely have to settle for less for his next go-round, assuming he re-ups. That's the kind of thing that happens when you start getting up there in years and begin pairing together losses.
