The co-main event of tonight's UFC Fight Night 44: "Swanson vs. Stephens" showcase at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, featured Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winner Kelvin Gastelum in a welterweight battle opposite Nico Musoke.
Well... it was scheduled to be contested at welterweight but Kelvin came in heavy at 172-pounds, forfeiting 20-percent of his purse in the process.
The two wasted very little time striking and got right to grappling and working each other on the mat. Musoke was getting the better of it too, taking Gastelum's back and sinking the hooks in. He failed to snag a submission, however, and the round ended right as Kelvin managed to get back to his feet.
The TUF guy had far more success in the second stanza. In fact, he had his way with Musoke, boxing him up and battering him around the cage for the full duration of the round. Nico's only success came on a few counter punches that appeared to do very little damage.
The story remained the same in the third and final frame. Gastelum's gas tank appeared limitless while Musoke showed the signs of a guy who had spent too much time getting beat on.
By the time they went to the scorecards, the result was clear.
Judges: 29-28 across the board, all in favor of Gastelum.
I love the DOG in Kelvin. Kid is such a best. Needs to hire @TheDolceDiet— Dana White (@danawhite) June 29, 2014
