Dan Henderson drops back down to middleweight, eyes next UFC fight in late 2014

USA TODAY Sports

Can "Hendo" find success in a familiar place?

It looks like Dan Henderson now has to watch his Popeye's Chicken intake if he wants to make weight for his next mixed martial arts (MMA) fight.

On the heels of his loss to Daniel Cormier (video), the No. 2 ranked light heavyweight in the world at UFC 173 last month, Henderson has decided to drop back down to the middleweight division.

"Hendo's" manager, Daniel Woirin, spilled the beans to MMA Fighting.

Henderson hasn't competed in the 185-pound class since losing to Jake Shields at Strikeforce: "Nashville" in their title fight at 2010. Prior to that, Henderson viciously knocked out Michael Bisping in their middleweight bout at UFC 100, his final fight for UFC before the two parted ways.

Henderson, has enjoyed success in both divisions, especially early on in his career when he became the first man to ever hold the PRIDE FC middleweight (205 pounds) and welterweight (185 pounds) titles at the same time.

Inside the Octagon, however, "Hendo" came up short in both of his title fights in each division, losing a light heavyweight title fight to Quinton Jackson at UFC 75 and then getting choked out by Anderson Silva in a middleweight title bout six months later at UFC 82.

After going 2-4 in his last six fights in the 205-pound division, the 44-year old wrestler looks to right his ship in a lower weight class as he eyes a return to action at years end.

Desperate means call for desperate measures.
