Reasons I Believe MMA is Dying

  • The Just Bleed mentality - Dana White has it. A huge percentage of the fan base has it, and that's a problem for MMA as it struggles to be accepted as a "sport." Two men/women standing flat-footed, trading punches will get a lot of cheers, but that's not a sport. It's a side show. Unfortunately, this mentality can be traced back to the early days of the UFC. It has deep roots.
  • Jack of All Trades, Master of None - In the early days of the UFC, it was a testing of martial art against martial art. Today, we see this diluted mix of styles that looks like amateur kickboxing, with some ground and pound and hugging against the cage thrown in. It's pretty terrible. It's actually hurting martial arts.
  • Greed - You have to really look to Dana White and the UFC on this one. They pay the fighters NOTHING. This will lead to talented fighters staying away from this business. The UFC also puts on WAY too many events now. The events are watered down, and losing interest.
  • The Tournament Format - I think we've seen the end of the MMA tournament recently, with Bjorn Rebney getting fired. As hated as Bellator may have been by hardcore fans, its tournaments made MMA at least FEEL like it was a real sport, with the fighters in control of title shots.
  • That One Bad Day - I hope I'm wrong about this one, but when Dana White says, "MMA is the fucking safest fucking sport in the fucking world!," I have to strongly disagree. There's nothing safe about pounding out another human being with elbows to the head. I think it's at the back of everyone's mind but they don't really say anything. Eventually, someone is going to get severely injured on the big stage, the UFC, and that could be the final nail, in my opinion.
  • Long Term Health Concerns - I don't think the true impact on a fighter's health has been seen yet. In the early days of the UFC, a fighter might have one fight and you'd never see him again. Now, they make careers out of it, with up to 3 fights a year and training year-round. In 10 years, we will likely see the effects this has on a fighter's health, especially brain trauma.
