The main event of Ultimate Fighting Championship's (UFC) second trip to Germany hardly had any time to get underway before it was over. Gegard Mousasi, the former DREAM champion and Strikeforce import who has struggled to establish himself inside the Octagon, submitted Mark Munoz via rear-naked choke in the very first round in the main event of today's (Sat., May 31, 2014) UFC Fight Night 41 showcase at O2 World in Berlin.
It was a dominant performance.
Munoz came in with an obvious game plan, one he hinted at in the preview for the bout. He felt Mousasi's wrestling wasn't up to snuff and he could exploit that with his superior skills.
He was wrong.
Dead wrong.
Actually, Mousasi stuffed all but one of Munoz's few takedown attempts and completely nullified that one by firmly reestablishing himself immediately after. He was never in any real danger at any point in this fight, instead overwhelming "The Filipino Wrecking Machine" with positional control.
He won every scramble and he passed Munoz's guard with ease, gaining full mount multiple times. The end came when he took Munoz's back and secured a rear-naked choke to force a tap.
It took him just 3:57 to get there.
