Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is on the prowl for new lightweight contenders, giving Erik Koch and Daron Cruickshank something to fight for (other than bragging rights) at UFC Fight Night 40 on FOX Sports 1, which took place on Sat. night (May 10, 2014) inside the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Welcome to the mix, Mr. Cruickshank.
"The Detroit Superstar" pounded out "New Breed" late in the opening frame by landing a devastating head kick that was immediately followed by heavy ground-and-pound. The referee looked a little slow to react, but Koch appeared to be okay after getting his head caved in.
The fight got off to a slow start as both men employed a feeling-out process with some long-range strikes. But it was Cruickshank who made better use of his combinations and landed the money shot when it counted. Impressive performance.
And a tough loss for Koch.
