Undefeated welterweight and two-time NCAA Division-1 Champion Ben Askren makes his highly anticipated ONE FC debut on May 30, 2014, when he takes on Azerbaijan's Bakhtiyar Abbasov, a Combat Sambo champion who is currently riding a nine-fight winning streak.
The three-round non-title bout will headline ONE FC: "Honor & Glory" at the Singapore Indoor Stadium and will be Askren's first taste of mixed martial arts (MMA) action since he stopped Andrey Koreshkov in the fourth round to defend his Bellator 170-pound title last July.
Abbasov (11-2) has 10 stoppage wins to his name and has a background in Judo, Jiu Jitsu and Combat Sambo having won numerous tournaments and competitions, but he has never faced an opponent the caliber of Askren (12-0) who was widely expected to challenge for the UFC title after being released by Bellator.
Among the other three fights announced today is a clash between undefeated featherweight which will see Brace MMA 145-pound champion Martin Nguyen (3-0) from Australia clash with Brazilian No Gi Grappling world champion Brunoi Pucci (3-0) from Brazil.
Two lightweights looking to rebound from losses will also collide as UFC veteran Caros Fodor (8-4) takes on Dutchman Willy Ni (15-8), while light heavyweight Jake Butler (3-1) returns to action against New Zealand’s Pane Haraki (3-2).
