It's time for another edition of Buzzfeed!, breaking down UFC 172: "Jones vs. Teixeira," which takes place TONIGHT (Sat., April 26, 2014) from Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.
Here is everything you need to know about the mixed martial arts (MMA) event that takes place later this evening.
Without further ado, let's get to the good stuff below.
Who: Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira
What: UFC 172
When: Saturday, April 26, 2014
Where: Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, Maryland
Why It Matters: Jon Jones looks for his seventh consecutive title defense later on tonight when he takes on Brazilian slugger Glover Teixeira. We've got arguably the best fighter in the world competing this evening, so that's a good enough reason to tune in and watch it all unfold in front of our eyes.
What's Hot: Apart from what was just said, it's going to be the first time UFC visits Baltimore, which is always a big deal when the promotion cracks a new market.
What's Not: In part one of his video blog, Dana White said that this was "the most stacked card we have ever done."
It's definitely a good card on paper, yet that's an insult for every fan that knows the difference between a kimura and a guillotine choke. There have been an abundance of cards in the past and this one wouldn't even rank in the Top 10.
New Blood: Only two fighters are making their debuts tonight and they're fighting each other on "Fight Pass."
The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 18 cast member Chris Beal goes up against Patrick Williams, who boasts a record of 7-3.
Original Card vs. Actual Card: There weren't too many injuries, but some things got shaken up.
Apart from Jones against Teixeira finally finding a home on this card after being expected to headline the past three pay-per-views (PPV), Danny Castillo was expected to face Isaac Vallie-Flagg, however Takanori Gomi will now be facing Vallie-Flagg and Castillo draws Charlie Brenneman.
Tarec Saffiedine was supposed to face Jake Ellenberger on the main card, but the Belgian suffered a back injury. Ellenberger now meets Robbie Lawler at UFC 173.
Ellenberger's brother, Joe Ellenberger was supposed to meet Vagner Rocha, but the Brazilian suffered an injury just a few days out and Ellenberger was scratched from the card.
How The "Prelims" Look: The five "Prelims" fights on this card are quite saucy to say the least.
Headlining the "Prelims" is former UFC flyweight title challenger Joseph Benavidez against Tim Elliott, and directly before that fight, "The Fireball Kid" Takanori Gomi makes his long-awaited return inside the Octagon against Isaac Vallie-Flagg. TUF 18 veteran Jessamyn Duke makes her second UFC appearance against Bethe Correia and kicking things off on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) is Castillo against Brenneman.
The lone "Fight Pass" bout pits Beal against Williams.
Who Needs A Win Badly: There are a handful of fighters coming off a loss, although only three fighters are put into question here.
Brenneman is in his second UFC stint, and if he fails to beat Castillo, the promotion could cut ties with him.
As exciting as Gomi could be, he's only won three UFC fights out of seven, so it would be in his best interest to get the job done against Vallie-Flagg.
Even though Medeiros stepped up on short notice, if he fails to score a win over Miller he may be gone. He failed to beat Rustam Khabilov at UFC 159 and after knocking out Yves Edwards at UFC Fight for the Troops 3, he tested positive for marijuana.
Interest Level: 7.5/10
This is one of those for better or for worse situations. This event could go down as highly entertaining, or it could be lackluster. The fights could materialize as great scraps, or they could be boring. It all depends. It's one of those fight cards you simply need to watch to make your own assessment and see how things turn out.
