UFC on FOX 11: "Werdum vs. Browne" is in the books and there is no better time to play matchmaker featuring our main card winners.
The Fabricio Werdum vs. Travis Browne-led event took place at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, last night (April 19, 2014) and it was arguably the best free card of 2014 so far.
In the main event, Werdum dominated Browne to earn the next UFC heavyweight title shot against Cain Velasquez in Mexico. "Vai Cavalo" completely outstruck "Hapa" on all levels, taking home the unanimous decision victory in a one-sided beating.
Miesha Tate returned to her winning ways against Liz Carmouche in the second round, earning the nod from the judges even though some observers may have contested the decision.
Other main card winners included Donald Cerrone, who beat Edson Barboza by first-round submission, and kicking off the main card action was Yoel Romero, toppling Brad Tavares by using his perfect grappling skills.
Indeed, after every event, fight fans are already thinking about what the future holds for the stars of the show. With another night of notable scraps, let us peer into our crystal ball and predict possible matchmaking scenarios.
Without further ado, he's our "Next Matches To Make."
Winner: Yoel Romero
Who He Should Fight Next: Winner of Francis Carmont vs. C.B. Dollaway at UFC Fight Night 41
Why They Should Fight: I found it pretty hilarious that Joe Rogan hinted at wanting to see Romero against Chris Weidman, directly after professing his love for a Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Anthony Pettis match up on the "prelims" broadcast.
Well, I'm afraid I've got some bad news.
As much as "Soldier of God" looked outstanding by drubbing Tavares and throwing him around like a feather, he's nowhere near title contention.
With that being said, he justifiably earns himself a stiff test and that's where the winner of Francis Carmont against C.B. Dollaway at UFC Fight Night 41 comes in. Both "Limitless" and "The Doberman" have extremely good grappling pedigrees, each possessing the tools to make it a dogfight against the Olympian in the fisticuffs department, too.
Winner: Donald Cerrone
Who He Should Fight Next: Josh Thomson
Why They Should Fight: There are reports stating Josh Thomson isn't ready to call it a career at 35 years old, eyeing a fast track to the title instead.
After his frustrating loss to Benson Henderson at UFC on FOX 10 earlier this year, who could blame him?
Considering Cerrone has fought almost every notable at 155 pounds in his 30-fight career, it's a little perplexing that he hasn't yet fought the gritty American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) veteran.
Currently riding a three-fight winning streak on his snowmobile since his loss to Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night 27, "Cowboy" has climbed right back up into the title picture, so it makes sense to arrange a meet and greet between these two.
The UFC on FOX 11 main card winner needs to be wary of Thomson's excellent wrestling base. Then again, I can try to predict how I think this will go down or explain why I feel like this is a great fight to set up, yet let's just be real with ourselves and agree on one thing -- this fight would be the most beautiful and violent contest of the summer.
Let's try to book this for the colossal July Fourth Weekend show or something of the same nature.
Winner: Miesha Tate
Who She Should Fight Next: Sarah Kaufman
Why They Should Fight: When you have a thin division, rematches are bound to happen.
Not many remember Tate vs. Kaufman from the Strikeforce Challengers card back in 2009. The Canadian beat "Cupcake" via unanimous decision, yet this time around, it could be completely different.
You can always bank on Kaufman for engaging in a slugfest and the recent UFC women's bantamweight title challenger could be willing to stand and bang, too, even if the Vancouver resident has the upper hand. Although, the grappling battle could be favorable for the former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) coach.
This potential scrap between former Strikeforce women's bantamweight champions doesn't only fit because each of these fighters just competed days apart from one another, but it's probably the only fight that truly makes sense for Tate.
She was already beaten by Cat Zingano, whose future is still undetermined. Alexis Davis will be fighting her arch nemesis, Ronda Rousey, and even if Sara McMann would be an option for the Washington-based fighter, McMann should instead fight Tate's latest opponent, Liz Carmouche, since they both just lost.
Winner: Fabricio Werdum
Who He Should Fight Next: Cain Velasquez
Why They Should Fight: You guessed it!
This one was a given, but let's just unload when it comes to Werdum's performance.
He completely dominated Browne, making him look like anything but a contender. By the fifth round, he battered "Hapa's" legs and cut him open badly on his face. The craziest part about Werdum's performance was his dominance over Browne in the striking department, as he absolutely destroyed his foe from the second round on, and even taunted the Hawaiian while he was competing.
"Vai Cavalo" books his date against the UFC heavyweight champion sometime soon in Mexico.
Let's keep this heavyweight division rolling, while we can.
That just about sums it up.
