The American travels overseas and grabs a win. Literally!

The co-main event of today's (Fri., April 11, 2014) UFC Fight Night 39: "Nogueira vs. Nelson" fight card from Abu Dhabi, broadcast on UFC Fight Pass, featured Clay Guida, loser of three of his past four contests, taking on Tatsuya Kawajiri, winner of six straight.

Because, well, Guida's still a tough test!

He proved that early when he cut his usual frenetic pace and Kawajiri wasn't entirely sure how to react to it, though he recovered quickly using a spinning back fist to the skull to make Guida aware of his power.

Then, "The Carpenter" made "Crusher" well aware of his, landing clean with a hard overhand right that put Kawajiri down. He recovered, surprisingly enough, and even managed to throw an armbar not long after. This time it was Clay's turn to survive and that's exactly what he did.

All this within the first half of the first round, folks.

They spent the remainder of the round exchanging takedowns. It was a hell of a start to what had promised to be a barn burner of a fight.

The action slowed down considerably in the second, with neither fighter gaining a clear advantage. It was a grappling heavy five minutes, punctuated by repeated takedown attempts from Guida to close it out.

Kawajiri attempted a takedown that he wouldn't give up on in the final frame, wasting a lot of time to mount effective offense in a close fight. When he did finally back out, he looked tired. Guida clinched and worked for a takedown of his own. He got it, too, slamming Kawajiri to the mat, though he gave up his neck in the process.

"Crusher" couldn't complete the submission, however, and they went to the judges scorecards.

Final decision: 30-27 across the board, all in favor of Guida.
