What's in a name?
A lot, if you're in the fight game and trying to sell tickets or attract viewers. That's why current Invicta FC featherweight champion Cristiane Justino -- one of the top names in women's combat sports -- was paid $25,000 for her co-main event loss to Jorina Baars.
"Jo Jo" took home just $5,000 (and Muay Thai bragging rights).
Baars outclassed "Cyborg" during the AXS-TV telecast of Lion Fight 14 last weekend (March 28, 2014) in "Sin City" (watch the video here), after a five-round display of superior technique. The Brazilian was dangerous throughout the fight, but struggled to overcome her opponent's reach.
"Cyborg" also received a 45-day medical suspension for precautionary reasons.
"Everyone gets sad when they lose ... but I love my job, I love to fight!" Justino said shortly after her loss. "I do not choose opponent. Certainly learned a lot from that fight. So I have to thank God and all my fans who support me. I can not control victory or defeat but I can try to make the best fight of the night!"
Justino is expected to defend her Invicta title later this summer, then drop to 135 pounds to try to make a run at UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (details). For more on her Lion Fight 14 loss to Baars click here.
