UFC Fight Night 37 results: Alexander Gustafsson mauls Jimi Manuwa, sends Daniel Cormier into potential eliminator fight opposite Phil Davis

But not if "Rumble" Johnson can eliminate "Mr. Wonderful" from the 205-pound title chase.

In case his performance against Jon Jones didn't convince you, Alexander Gustafsson is the second-best light heavyweight on the planet.

Sorry, "DC."

"The Mauler" lived up to his nickname on Saturday (March 8, 2014) with a second-round technical knockout victory over the formerly unbeaten British banger Jimi Manuwa, in the "Fight Pass" main event of UFC Fight Night 37 from inside the O2 Arena in London, England.

See how it all went down here.

By unpinning the "Poster Boy" from the 205-pound rankings, Gustafsson unofficially moves into second place, where he will now wait for Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira to tend to their business in the main event of UFC 172, which takes place next month in Baltimore, Maryland.

More on that fight here.

That's great news for Sweden's son, but bad news for Daniel Cormier, who has a built-in beef with "Bones" and was hoping a Manuwa upset would help propel him into a mid-summer title fight. But that's off the table after what happened across the pond and "DC" needs a big win over a top contender to put himself on deck.

I'm thinking it's likely to be Phil Davis.

With Rashad Evans sidelined for the foreseeable future thanks to a devastating knee injury, "Mr. Wonderful" is really the only person high enough in the rankings to give Cormier the bump he needs to be a title contender. That, added to his already impressive resume as a heavyweight.

But first thing's first.

Davis has to get through the returning Anthony Johnson -- also at UFC 172 -- with an impressive performance. In addition, the former collegiate wrestling standout needs to emerge from "Charm City" unscathed, so that he and Cormier can throw down around the same time as Jones/Teixeira and Gustafsson.

Unless "Rumble" plays spoiler.

If Johnson can upset the apple cart, he may not have done enough at 205 pounds to put him into a Cormier fight, which means "DC" will be at the mercy of UFC matchmakers. It's hard to scream for a title shot when his only win as a light heavyweight is over Patrick Cummins, but the promotion is running out of contenders.

There are still a lot of pieces to this puzzle, but what we do know, is that Gustafsson is probably next in line, and will have a chance to finish what he started last September at UFC 165. The ball is in your court, champ.
