Dan Henderson baffles UFC fans by asking for Lyoto Machida fight on Twitter

USA TODAY Sports

Anyone clamoring for another 15 minutes of Henderson vs. Machida?

Dan Henderson snapped a three-fight losing streak last Sunday night (March 23, 2013) by knocking out Mauricio Rua in the main event of UFC Fight Night 38, which aired on the FOX Sports 1 network from inside Nelio Dias Gymnasium in Natal, Brazil.

See how it all went down here.

Shortly after the fight, "Hendo" told the mixed martial arts (MMA) media that he was still after the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) title and would be "open to anything" in regards to what weight class he would compete in, having formerly contended at 185 pounds.

Then came this.

I guess when he said "open to anything," he wasn't kidding.

UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman was forced to bow out of the UFC 173 pay-per-view (PPV) main event -- where he was expected to face Lyoto Machida -- in order to have knee surgery. His title defense against "The Dragon" was postponed until UFC 175 in July.

More on that turn of events here.

But even after the promotion opted to push the fight back a few months, Henderson tried to convince UFC President Dana White to let him fight Machida while the "All American" healed from his pending surgery, an unusual request that left many of his Twitter followers scratching their heads.

Some of their responses:

Guess Shogun's punches have more power than we thought.

Why would Lyoto do that and risk his title shot?

Probably another boring fight...

Strange.

Even if Henderson somehow convinced Machida to surrender a contractually-bound title fight, taming "The Dragon" does not get him any closer to Weidman, as Vitor Belfort is expected to be ready for his return to competition this summer (after this).

That's the same "Phenom" who pasted "Hendo" last November.

At best, it would be a lateral move and a risky one at that, considering Machida's elusive defense already gave him the fits at UFC 157. It should also be noted that Henderson hasn't competed at middleweight in four years, a lopsided loss to Jake Shields in Strikeforce.

And bringing up UFC 151, the canceled event that White eventually blamed on Henderson, doesn't exactly sweeten the deal.

None of it really matters, of course, since UFC 175 will proceed as scheduled (we hope) and "Hendo" will get anther fight at light heavyweight (not that "Bones" is worried). But maybe some of you folks out there in fight land can shed some light on his recent tweet.

Anyone?
