Slowly but surely, ONE FC is putting together a solid heavyweight division with enough depth and diversity to guarantee some exciting future match ups. Three new signings have been announced this week with James McSweeney, Igor Subora and Chi Lewis Parry all putting pen to paper on contracts with Asia's biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion.
Englishman Parry (5-0) is perhaps the most interesting of the three. He is a former professional basketball player who holds a K-1 heavyweight title with the UCMMA promotion and all five of his wins have come by way of stoppage, the most recent a first round TKO at Heat Sports 2 last December.
Subora (5-1) is the URCC Heavyweight Champion and is riding a five fight win streak. The Ukrainian is based in the Philippines and just like Chi, all of his wins have come by way of stoppage with every single fight ending in the opening round.
His most recent TKO win took just 24 seconds at URCC 24 last November.
The third heavyweight to join the roster is James Mcsweeney (12-11), who is best known for an appearance on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): 10 and subsequent Octagon stint. In keeping with the theme of signing fighters with plenty of stoppages on their records, he has only ever been the distance once in his entire career.
There is no word on when Parry or Subora will make their promotional debuts but sources in Australia say he is penciled in to face Chris Lokteff, another heavyweight who has a very high number of stoppage wins to his name, at ONE FC: "Rise of Heroes" on May 2 in Manila.
ONE FC has primarily been focused on building the lighter divisions but the number of signed heavyweights has increased dramatically in recent months with Tony Johnson Jr, Paul Cheng and Kelvin Fitial already on the roster as well as Parry, Subora, McSweeney and Lokteff.
