Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has announced a five-round middleweight main event for its long-awaited return to Germany, featuring Mark Munoz vs. Gegard Mousasi in the UFC Fight Night 41 headliner inside O2 World Arena in Berlin, scheduled for May 31, 2014, live on Fight Pass.
Yes, that's the same day as The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): "Brazil 3" live finale.
Munoz (13-4) is hanging on by a thread, at least in terms of contending for the division title. He was able to bounce back from a devastating loss to Chris Weidman in July 2012 by out-muscling Tim Boetsch last summer. Unfortunately, "The Filipino Wrecking Machine" was unable to keep that momentum going and got put to sleep by light heavyweight import Lyoto Machida back in October.
At 36 years old, a loss in Berlin could send him to the back of the line for good.
"Mousasi is a great opponent and competitor," Munoz said in today's release. "I am looking forward to competing against him and getting one step closer to fighting for the title."
That's not to suggest it has been all wine and roses for Mousasi (34-4). "The Dreamcatcher" was able to win his Octagon debut, but slapping around Ilir Latifi was akin to Daniel Cormier beating up a barista. It counts, but doesn't do much in terms of forward momentum.
Then came last month's loss to "The Dragon," which doesn't seem to have dampened his spirits.
Should be interesting.
No other bouts have been announced for the UFC Fight Night 41 fight card, but you can expect that to change in the coming days. In the meantime, let's get some early predictions on "Munoz vs. Mousasi."
