"This evening, we were made aware of a situation involving Thiago Silva. We are in the process of gathering the facts and have no further comment at this time."
Not willing to rush to judgement until all the facts of the bizarre case are in, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will take a "wait-and-see" approach to the recent arrest of Thiago Silva, who was booked into Broward County Main Jail in South Florida earlier this morning (Fri., Feb. 7, 2014) on four charges, including aggravated battery and resisting an officer.
***UPDATE: UFC has since released the following statement:
The Ultimate Fighting Championship has terminated the contract of Thiago Silva, effective immediately.
Even before running afoul with the law, Silva was on thin ice with the world's leading mixed martial arts promotion (MMA) thanks to repeated issues with missing weight before fights and getting busted for banned substances after them throughout his tenure.
Most recently, Silva delivered an admittedly "shitty" performance against Matt Hammill at UFC Fight Night 29 back in Oct. 2013. The Brazilian "failed to make weight" and then was unable to finish the Light Heavyweight match because he "gassed."
Silva vowed to correct those mistakes and come back stronger, but it remains to be seen if the door will remain open once UFC sifts through all the facts of this latest legal case.
