Combat sports fans can add a marquee Lightweight scrap between Donald Cerrone vs. Edson Barboza to the flurry of fight announcements Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has made in recent weeks.
The 155-pound match is set for UFC on FOX 11, the mixed martial arts (MMA) event planned for Amway Center in Orlando, Fla., on April 19, 2014, supporting the Heavyweight main event between Travis Browne vs. Fabricio Werdum.
Cerrone and Barboza are riding win streaks and looking to make headway in a division led by oft-injured Anthony Pettis, who will likely next meet Featherweight champion Jose Aldo in a "super fight" (more details here) when he is 100 percent.
"Cowboy" will come into the match-up following a first round head kick knockout of Adriano Martins at UFC on FOX 10 (watch video highlights here), looking to solidify his status as one of the best lightweight fighters in the world. While his unabashed stand up style has earned him numerous post-fight bonuses in his 12-stint UFC career, any recklessness against Barboza may result in him being on the wrong end of a bonus worthy highlight.
Barboza will come into Orlando with only one loss on his record (13-1) and in the midst of a three-fight win streak.
His most recent outing was a hard fought split-decision victory over Danny Castillo at UFC on FOX 9 that showed the 28-year-old's ability to overcome adversity early in a contest. This usually isn't the case with Barboza, with nine of his victories coming via stoppage and seven not making it out of the first frame.
