I have been a member of Mania since October 2013 and lurked on this site for about 6 months before that.
I have seen how you all operate as part of a pretty awesome community and I want to become a more visible entity in here. I am going to look to do a fan post of some kind every couple of weeks but because I’m in Australia, I do not get to see a lot of the regional talent that you see in the USA, so my knowledge mostly extends to UFC, Bellator & WSOF. For my first post I thought I would let you in on some of my favourite fighters.
GOAT (and my favourite fighter)
In my mind, there are only 3 possible votes for the GOAT, Fedor, Anderson and GSP. I have made the comment on here before that I truly believe GSP is the greatest of the great. My two main criteria for picking a GOAT are 1: Length of time at the top and 2: How impressive they were while they were there.
All three that I have mentioned were at the top for a long period of time, so for me it comes down to something as subjective as impressiveness. Until his last fight against Hendricks, GSP ruled his division (which is always in the top 2/3 in terms of depth) without ever looking vulnerable. While he stopped becoming a finisher, he still decimated opponents with his extreme well roundedness, meticulous game plans and his almost perfect execution of those plans.
Anderson and Fedor had their greatest moments arrive because they dug deep when they were in trouble, however GSP was so systematic in the way he destroyed opponents he never got into those situations. His two loses were convincingly avenged, and even after 18 months out he destroyed a very game Carlos Condit despite being well below his best. I also still remember the beating he put on Kos and his eye after the bout.
I would like to say, I am not diminishing the achievements of the other two, but for me the domination of GSP’s reign stands above all else.
MY TOP 5 FIGHTERS IN THE UFC TODAY
#1 Mark Hunt – I was lucky enough to be at the Bigfoot fight and that moved him up to number 1 instantly (he was still in the top 5 before that fight). The way he connected with the crowd, the fight he put on (showing his heart, grit and determination) and the humbleness he displays is awesome. He might never hold the title, but seeing him come from Dana wanting to buy out his contract, to headlining a card with a top 5 heavyweight is an amazing story & his fights make for exquisite viewing.
#2 Joe Lauzon – I don’t think I need to explain this one too much. He is a guy who walks in with the goal of putting on a show and with no regard for his well-being. While this will likely give him severe injuries when he retires, it is a joy to watch and I will almost always buy a card he is on!
#3 Chad Mendes – I was a very casual fan until I saw my first live event, which was the TUF Smashes finale. Seeing Mendes come in and destroy Yaotzin Meza and the subsequent fights he has had have made me a massive fan. Bang Ludwig has come in and improved his game massively. I am really hoping Aldo has this rematch because I truly believe he can be the one who stops Aldo’s reign.
#4 Hector Lombard – Put simply, he is a beast. He would not have made my list at 185, but now he has dropped to 170 I don’t think he will be fitched again like he was against Okami. He is one that goes for the kill, has excellent Judo and has wicked power in his hands.
#5 Jon Jones – I appreciate greatness, and Jon Jones is great. He could very easily finish his career as the GOAT, he always goes for the finish, he is always looking to make something happen & truthfully I don’t quite get why he gets the hate he does? I understand people think he is disingenuous (which I disagree with), but if I am paying $50 for a card, I want to see the best fighters and Jones is one of them!
Anyways, it is 1am here in Australia, so I am going to try to get some sleep, but I will be back with another post in a couple of weeks (I can hear the excitement from everybody now)! I am also sure I have some grammatical errors, so probably not much point in highlighting them!!
Cheers and good night!
