Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has yanked the light heavyweight fight between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva from the UFC 173 pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event, scheduled for May 24, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Adjust your calendars accordingly.
Instead of serving as the fluffer for "Weidman vs. Belfort," the 205-pound grudge match has instead been given top billing on a new fight card in Brazil, which the promotion today announced will take place on May 31, 2014 (see a photo of their first staredown here).
The city and venue are expected to be announced in the coming days.
Sonnen and Silva are currently filming The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): "Brazil 3," which is expected to debut on March 9 via the promotion's new "Fight Pass" digital network (more on that here).
They were actually scheduled to hook 'em up as early as UFC 167; however, lingering back issues and a dispute over the pay-per-view (PPV) revenue kept "The Axe Murderer" in the tool shed. Sonnen stayed busy by splitting a pair of bouts between Shogun Rua (win) and Rashad Evans (loss).
Then came the recent UFC 173 announcement and now this. Perhaps the promotion is making room for a Rashad Evans vs. Daniel Cormier co-main event over Memorial Day Weekend, to account for "Suga's" untimely injury.
