Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight Yancy Medeiros was suspended for 90 days after failing his drug test for marijuana metabolites in the wake of his UFC Fight Night 31 win over Yves Edwards last November, which has now been changed to a "no contest."
There seems to be a lot of that going around lately.
The good news is, his suspension was retroactive, which means he will still be able to compete against Joe Ellenberger at the upcoming UFC 172 pay-per-view (PPV) event, scheduled for April 26, 2014 at the Baltimore Arena in Maryland (details), assuming he can pass a mandatory drug test.
MMA Junkie brought word of the suspension earlier today.
Marijuana has been in the news lately thanks to the high-profile case of Jessica Eye. "Evil" was popped for cannabinoids in the wake of her UFC 166 win over Sarah Kaufman, but danced around the issue until the commission released its findings to the mixed martial arts (MMA) media earlier this week (see it here).
Eye was issued a probated suspension.
The severity of the punishment often differs from state to state. In addition, the number of past offenses can also play into the decision, which is why Nick Diaz was met with such a harsh penalty in his run-in with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) back in 2012.
This was the first offense for Medeiros.
