If top Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight wunderkind Rory MacDonald is hoping to moonlight as a competitive grappler, he might want to cool it with all that "bones break before I do" kind of chatter.
Especially when injuries are blamed for this.
MacDonald was a featured combatant in last Sat. night's (Nov. 22, 2014) Metamoris 5 jiu-jitsu tournament, and found himself in all kinds of trouble against grappling whiz-kid J.T. Torres. "Red King" survived and battled to a draw, but it was touch-and-go there for awhile.
From his conversation with Sherdog.com:
"This was a personal experience I wanted to do. I love jiu-jitsu. It's been a passion of mine since I started martial arts, so when I had the opportunity to do something like this -- submission only, 20 minutes straight -- it was super interesting to me, and to be able to compete against J.T. I was super excited and it was something I wanted to achieve and do in my martial arts career. I would have been more satisfied if I would have won, but I had fun and it was a good experience and hopefully I can come back. My arm hurts, but it was going to break before I would ever tap."
Let's hope it doesn't come to that.
MacDonald (18-2) is expected to get the next 170-pound title shot against the winner of Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler, who rematch for "Bigg Rigg's" crown at the upcoming UFC 181 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Las Vegas, Nevada (more on that here).
Not that anyone expects either of those sluggers to look for a submission.
