Anderson Silva is famous for being a man who demands respect at all times (or "hespect" as the Brazilian fighter pronounces the word in his thickly accented English).
However, it appears the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion is even more sensitive to "dis-hespect" than anyone could have thought possible.
Indeed, it appears the mixed martial arts (MMA) legend has filed a police report against a Brazilian woman who wrote some less than flattering things about him on Twitter (per a report via MMA Fighting:)
According to the chief of police department in Pinhais, Marcelo Magalhaes, the UFC star felt offended when a woman called him "rotten" on Twitter.
"We’re still investigating to get her name, address and phone," Magalhaes told Globo. "It’s a 40-year-old woman who wrote on the internet, in a social media, several phrases, including ‘Brazil will see the idol and rotten that you are’."
In an interview with a local radio station, Magalhaes said the woman also called Silva a "s—--ty idol."
The process is expected to go to court next. The penalty for this type of crime in Brazil is up to six months in jail, or a fine.
Now I don't profess to be an expert on Brazilian law, but it hardly seems worth pressing charges over being called "rotten" and a "shitty idol" on Twitter (although if she indeed did write the Portuguese equivalent of the syntactically-challenged phrase "Brazil will see the idol and rotten that you are" she does deserve a hefty fine from the international grammar police).
In fact, it was a dash of verbal invective -- far worse than that written by the anonymous 40-year-old Twitter troll -- that ended up making Silva a ton of money during the course of his feud with Chael Sonnen.
One would hope Silva would have thicker skin than to get bent out of shape over some juvenile, ultimately harmless taunts by a person he has never met before, but then again he's always been rather sensitive.
This is, after all, the same guy who once threatened to break Sonnen's face in a completely unhinged rant.
What do you think Maniacs: is Silva taking things too far while he recovers from his shattered shin (read latest injury update here) or does the Twitter troll deserve to be taken down a peg?
