The co-headlining attraction of tonight's (Sat., Jan. 25, 2014) UFC on Fox 10: "Henderson vs. Thomson" event from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, featured two heavy hitting heavyweights throwing leather, as Gabriel Gonzaga took on Stipe Miocic.
Both fighters were firing with hard punches and kicks, with Gonzaga landing with a right hand over the top. He was setting up for it in everything he was doing, using it as a counter strike and hoping to end the night early
Miocic was game for the challenge, though, and took a few to give even more. He was jabbing and kicking low and finding plenty of success doing it, enough so that "Napao" made sure to shoot a takedown -- one he earned -- with under a minute to go in the opening round.
The action slowed considerably in the second as the Croatian slowly but surely imposed his will by pressing Gonzaga around the cage and tiring him out. The Brazilian did an awful lot of backing up while covering up, only occasionally firing off that overhand right in the hopes of scoring a knockout.
By the end of the second, Miocic had almost doubled his opponent's offensive output in terms of significant strikes, at least according to the live Fight Metric scoring.
Gonzaga's gas tank was gone by the middle of the third, enough so that Stipe was able to simply push him over and rain punches down on his head. The bout went to the scorecards, but it was clear who won.
Miocic was awarded the decision on scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28.
