Super Bowl weather forecast could force Dana White to move UFC 169 to Monday

Ron Chenoy-US PRESSWIRE

But then he would have to go head-to-head with Monday Night RAW! Hmm ... anything good on this Tuesday?

For all you mixed martial arts (MMA) fans freezing your asses off in Chicago, I'm afraid I've got some bad news.

We're not faring any better here in the New York area.

In fact, I live about 35 minutes from MetLife Stadium and it's one big, sloppy mess, between the snow, salt and sub-freezing temperatures. And from what the weather forecast is telling us, there's another helping on tap for Super Bowl weekend.

One of the NFL's many contingency plans is to move the big game to Saturday, in hopes of avoiding the bad weather, which affects not only the game itself, but the roads in the immediate area, as well as public transportation, which are a total logjam even without 82,000 football fans heading in the same direction.

What's that got to do with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)?

Well, the promotion is holding its UFC 169: "Barao vs. Faber 2" pay-per-view (PPV) on Saturday night (Feb. 1, 2014) at the nearby Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, which means they would have to try to run head-to-head with the most watched program of the year.

Good luck with that.

"I've been getting some tweets, people asking, 'What are you gonna do if the game gets moved to Saturday?'," said UFC President Dana White during this week's media scrum (watch it). "Wow, wouldn't that be a fucker? If 120 million people are watching the Super Bowl on Saturday, that would ... yeah, let's just hope that doesn't happen. I'll move my fight to Monday."

White was clearly joking, as it would be a total disaster -- logistically -- when you think about all the fighters and their camps, families, etc., who are scheduled to check out of their hotels and fly back on Sunday, as well as scheduling conflicts at "The Rock," and so forth.

But if NFL bumps the Super Bowl to Saturday, UFC is screwed any way you slice it.

Personally, I think the big game (see our coverage stream here) stays right where it is, when it is, and the league will roll the dice and hope that nothing catastrophic happens, or at least nothing bad enough that they can't make go away by cutting a few checks.

Beware of black ice!
