FINAL: Seahawks defeat 49ers, 23-17

The NFC Championship Game, which took place today (Sun., Jan. 19, 2014) at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington, is officially in the books and the Seattle Seahawks defeated the San Francisco 49ers by a final score of 23-17 to advance to Super Bowl 48.

They'll play the Denver Broncos on Feb. 2 in New Jersey.

It was a hard fought game between two teams who came in with tough defenses that played well throughout most of the day. The 49ers, after stalling for most of the game, were moving the ball through the air on their final drive but a Colin Kaepernick pass to Michael Crabtree was deflected by Richard Sherman into the arms of Malcolm Smith.

That was the backbreaker.

Kaepernick played well at points -- he ran for 130 yards on 11 attempts and threw for 153 more -- but he was disheveled at other points -- he turned the ball over three times. The 49ers defense played well but gave up big plays in even bigger moments.

That's the story, morning glory.

Now, Seattle's vaunted secondary advances to New Jersey to take on the number one offense in the league led by quite possibly the greatest quarterback of all time.

Surely, this is what the NFL was hoping for. And they got it.

49ers vs. Seahawks live scoring: Fourth quarter

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS VS. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS, NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Quarter 4

49ers - 17
Seahawks - 13

Seattle ball at their own 47 yard line.

3rd and 25: The pass from Russel Wilson is caught by Zach Miller for 15 yards. That sets up a long field goal.
4th and 7: Instead of a field goal, Seattle ended up burning a timeout and going for it at the 49ers 35 yard line. They got an offsides but it didn't matter after Wilson threw a long touchdown to Jermaine Kearse. That was a 35 yarder to go ahead by three after the extra point was good.

49ers - 17
Seahawks - 20

LaMichael James got a nice return, finally, but a flag came out for holding. Because of course it would in this game. Pretty sure the referees decided who they favor in this one.

San Francisco ball at their own 11 yard line.

1st and 10: Kaepernick couldn't find Boldin on a route up the sideline.
2nd and 10: Pass caught by Gore over the middle for a gain of five.
3rd and 5: In a huge spot, Kaepernick rolled left, threw across his body, and found Boldin for a big first down to keep the drive alive.
1st and 10: Kendall Hunter went off the left side and couldn't find much room, picking up just two yards.
2nd and 8: Kaepernick decided to run and went out of bounds just under two yards shy of the marker.
3rd and 1: In a huge spot, they get called for delay of game.
3rd and 6: Kaepernick was hit from behind, sacked, fumbled, and the Seahawks recovered it.

Seattle ball at the San Francisco 6 yard line.

1st and Goal: Lynch was hit twice before being tackled after a gain of a yard.
2nd and Goal: Seattle is whistled and called for a false start. That puts them back at the 10 yard line.
2nd and Goal: They ran play-action and Wilson threw too high for Tate on the outside.
3rd and Goal: A pass was caught and then fumbled, clearly recovered by Navarro Bowman, but the referees ruled that Seattle came away with it, even though reviews made it clear that wasn't the case at all. In addition, Bowman was severely injured on the play. This was really sad, a true black mark on the NFL.
4th and Goal: Seattle went for it and Lynch fumbled. The ball bounced around forever and San Francisco eventually came up with it. It didn't matter, it was their ball anyway.

San Francisco ball at their own 15 yard line.

1st and 10: Hunter runs for 10 yards, fighting for it.
1st and 10: Kaepernick throws it right to a Seattle defender. That was awful.

Seattle ball at the San Francisco 40 yard line.

1st and 10: Turbin runs off the left side and gains just two.
2nd and 8: A rollout off play-action saw Wilson go way too high, incomplete.
3rd and 8: Wilson from the shotgun found Tate for a first down. He show boated after, no flag. Because of course there wouldn't be in this game. Not against Seattle, at least.
1st and 10: Lynch runs for two yards after breaking a million tackles.
2nd and 8: Wilson fumbled the snap and picked it up just to throw it away. Because it was a busted running play and receivers were blocking downfield, they got called for pass interference.
2nd and 18: Lynch on an inside handoff goes nowhere, maybe a three yard gain.
3rd and 15: From the shotgun, Wilson found Tate for a short gain. That sets up for a field goal attempt of 47 yards.
4th and 11: Right down the pipe, the field goal went in.

49ers - 17
Seahawks - 23

The kickoff is returned, but not far.

San Francisco ball at their own 22 yard line.

1st and 10: They run an option to Hunter where he looked like he wanted to throw but decided to run and lost a yard.
2nd and 11: Kaepernick found Boldin for a gain of 9 to bring up a short third down with under two and a half minutes left.
3rd and 2: Kaepernick's pass to Crabtree went too far inside and fell incomplete.
4th and 2: Kaepernick found Gore for a big first down conversion and 17 yards. A perfect pass across his body. It turns out, they added a second to the clock. So now it's at the two minute warning.
1st and 10: Kaepernick broke a couple tackles on his way to a four yard gain.
2nd and 6: Kaepernick found Boldin to the 45 yard line for four more.
3rd and 2: Big throw and catch to Crabtree for a first down. Big play.
1st and 10: Kaepernick found Davis for another first down, this one for 11 yards.
1st and 10: Kaepernick went to the end zone but Richard Sherman deflected it and another Seahawks defender came down with it. That's the game.

Seattle ball at their own 18 yard line.

1st and 10: Wilson kneels and that's it.
2nd and 11: Wilson kneels again because San Francisco called a timeout.
3rd and 12: Wilson kneels one final time because the 49ers called yet another timeout.

49ers - 17
Seahawks - 23

49ers vs. Seahawks live scoring: Third quarter

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS VS. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS, NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Quarter 3

49ers - 10
Seahawks - 3

San Francisco will get the ball to begin the second half.

LaMichael James takes it for 21 yards from the goal line.

San Francisco ball at their own 21 yard line.

1st and 10: Frank Gore gets it first and he's down after a loss of a yard.
2nd and 11: Colin Kaepernick finds Anquan Boldin for a six yard gain on an inside route.
3rd and 4: Kaepernick scrambled and threw back across the field to Michael Crabtree for a big 12 yard gain. Byron Maxwell was injured on the play.
1st and 10: A deep shot to Crabtree down the sideline misses.
2nd and 10: Gore bobbled the handoff and ended up losing a big chunk of yards.
3rd and 16: Kaepernick avoided multiple sacks but ultimately just skipped a pass down the field. That was ugly.
4th and 16: Golden Tate didn't get a lot of yards but the Seahawks will have good field position.

Seattle ball at their own 40 yard line.

1st and 10: Marshawn Lynch picked up 11 yards to start the drive right.
1st and 10: Lynch got it again and broke a couple tackles to pick up five.
2nd and 5: They run a screen to Doug Baldwin and pick up four.
3rd and 1: Lynch found room to run through the line and broke it free all the way to the end zone for the score. That was a 40 yard trot with a cut back and an awful angle from Eric Reid. The extra point was good.

49ers - 10
Seahawks - 10

LaMichael James brought out the ensuing kickoff but didn't get far.

San Francisco ball at their own 16 yard line.

1st and 10: Gore cut over the right side and picked up nine.
2nd and 1: Kendall Hunter spelled Gore and picked up two for a fresh set of downs.
1st and 10: Crabtree grabbed a well thrown ball for a big gain up to the 50 yard line. That one went for 22 yards.
1st and 10: They ran a naked bootleg on the next play and Seattle collapsed hard on Gore. Kaepernick ripped off a big gain.
1st and 10: Kaepernick was hit, sacked, and fumbled the ball. It was recovered by the 49ers, though, and they picked up a couple on the play.
2nd and 8: Kaepernick fires a DAGGER into the end zone and Boldin makes an unbelievable catch for the score. Wow.

49ers - 17
Seahawks - 10

The ensuing kickoff is taken by Baldwin all the way into 49ers territory for a huge gain. That was the right way to answer back.

Seattle ball at the San Francisco 33 yard line.

1st and 10: A screen pass to Tate gets a first down up to the 20 after a 13 yard gain.
1st and 10: Lynch got tripped up after a gain of four.
2nd and 6: Lynch got it again but couldn't find the edge and was wrapped up at the line of scrimmage for a loss of a yard.
3rd and 7: Flags are throw everywhere. False start, five yard penalty.
3rd and 12: Wilson was under pressure and just barely threw it away.
4th and 12: The field goal goes through.

49ers - 17
Seahawks - 13

The kickoff goes for a touchback.

San Francisco ball at their own 20 yard line.

1st and 10: Gore gets it to the inside and goes nowhere.
2nd and 10: Kaepernick appeared to complete the ball to Vernon Davis but he was hit and the ball was knocked out.
3rd and 10: Kaepernick had to throw it away in the direction of Crabtree.
4th and 10: Andy Lee is hit by a defender and they call running into the kicker. It's a five yard penalty as opposed to the 15 yard variety. The penalty is declined.

Seattle ball at their own 38 yard line.

1st and 10: Lynch gets the inside handoff and rips off five yards.
2nd and 5: Lynch rushes inside again and they give him a super liberal ball spot. First down.
1st and 10: Play-action deep ball into double coverage doesn't work out after Jermaine Kearse couldn't make the catch. He was hit on both sides by Eric Reid and Donte Whitner.
2nd and 10: Another play-action leads to a Doug Baldwin catch for 12 yards and a first down.
1st and 10: Four yards on a run by Turbin.
2nd and 6: Wilson scrambled and threw the ball away but couldn't manage to get the ball to the line of scrimmage or get out of the tackle box. That's intentional grounding, a 10 yard penalty and a loss of down.

That ends the third quarter.

49ers lead Seahawks, 10-3, at halftime

The NFC Championship Game, featuring the San Francisco 49ers taking on the Seattle Seahawks today (Sun., Jan. 19, 2014) at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington, is officially at halftime.

And after two quarters, the 49ers are leading by a score of 10-3.

The story of the game so far is one of strong defense, though the 49ers are the squad coming through in the big spot. In fact, if it weren't for a blown coverage that led to a 51-yard gain on a pass from a scrambling Russel Wilson, Seattle wouldn't have much offense to speak of.

Wilson has been hounded all day, getting sacked multiple times.

Colin Kaepernick, meanwhile, has shown up big. He didn't have much success throwing the ball, but he's churned out over 100 yards rushing, including a monster 58 yard gallop that set up the first touchdown of the game, a one yard plunge from Anthony Dixon on fourth and goal.

There are still two quarters to play. Here we go.

49ers vs. Seahawks live scoring: Second quarter

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS VS. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS, NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Quarter 2

Seattle ball at the San Francisco 48 yard line.

4th and 20: The punt was muffed by LaMichael James, and he took a big hit that wasn't penalized, but the 49ers recovered.

San Francisco ball at their own 14 yard line.

1st and 10: Colin Kaepernick went to Anquan Boldin back shoulder on the outside, but he couldn't hang on to it.
2nd and 10: Frank Gore got a read option hand off and went to the right side for a short gain, maybe just a yard.
3rd and 9: Kaepernick was under pressure and barely got it away to Michael Crabtree. It fell incomplete but Seahawks corner Richard Sherman was flagged for holding. That's five yards and a free first down.
1st and 10: Gore went up the middle and ran into a brick wall. No gain.
2nd and 10: Kaepernick scrambled when he couldn't find an open receiver and he managed to get past the marker for a first down.
1st and 10: Kaepernick again scrambled and this time he went way down the field for a HUGE gain all the way inside the 10 yard line. That was a 58 yard run and Kaepernick is already over 100 yards on the ground.
1st and Goal: Gore picked up just two to the eight yard line.
2nd and Goal: Gore got it and went up the middle to the one yard line for seven yards.
3rd and Goal: Anthony Dixon came in and he went flying over the line. The referees waited to make the call but signaled touchdown. They're going to review this one. They overrule it and say he was down just inside the one yard line.
4th and Goal: No denying him that time. Dixon went over the top and scored. A 49ers linemen, Mike Iupati, was injured during the play. The extra point was good.

49ers - 10
Seahawks - 0

The ensuing kick was returned by Baldwin, who couldn't find much room.

Seattle ball at their own 24 yard line.

1st and 10: Baldwin caught a screen pass and ran for seven yards with it before getting thrown out of bounds.
2nd and 3: Wilson ran play-action but couldn't find an open receiver and took a hit as he was throwing the ball away.
3rd and 3: Golden Tate made a catch on a quick out just beyond the marker for a first down. Needed three and got four.
1st and 10: Lych got the ball and took a hit right when he got to the line of scrimmage. He managed to push forward for a gain of three, though.
2nd and 7: Wilson scrambled for what felt like 20 seconds before just flinging the ball way down field to an open man, Baldwin, who made the catch all the way down inside the 11 yard line. That one went for 51 yards. Baldwin was injured during the play, however.
1st and 10: The 49ers blitzed off the edge and got there in a hurry for a sack.
2nd and 15: An inside run to Lynch went for just two yards despite a couple broken tackles.
3rd and 13: Wilson's pass was way off and that forces the Seahawks to attempt a field goal to bring this game to within a one score game.
4th and 13: The field goal is good.

49ers - 10
Seahawks - 3

The ensuing kickoff goes out of the end zone for a touchback.

San Francisco ball at their own 20 yard line.

1st and 10: Kaepernick's pass over the middle was dropped by a wide open Boldin.
2nd and 10: They went with a read option that Kaepernick kept himself but it didn't matter because they were flagged for holding. Seattle declined the penalty because they stopped Kaepernick behind the line for a loss of two.
3rd and 12: Kaepernick's pass was caught by Quinton Patton. for just a two yard gain. That won't cut it.
4th and 10: A line drive punt was taken by Golden Tate but he was wrapped up immediately after a 42 yard punt.

Seattle ball at their own 37 yard line.

1st and 10: Lynch finally found some room to operate, gaining seven yards.
2nd and 3: Lynch got it again and pushed forward for a gain of four and a first down.
1st and 10: Lynch got it again but ran into a wall of 49ers for no gain.
2nd and 10: Lynch again got the rock and went up the middle for seven more. That will take us to the two minute warning.
3rd and 3: Wilson went with a hard count and that got the 49ers to jump but Seattle went first, so it's a false start and a loss of five yards.
3rd and 8: Wilson completed a big throw for nine yards to convert.
1st and 10: Play-action pass turns into a scrambling run from Wilson for three yards.
2nd and 7: Wilson couldn't find an open man down the field and when he went to step up in the pocket, Aldon Smith grabbed him from behind for a sack.
3rd and 8: Wilson scrambled around backwards and ended up flipping it off to a tight end, who only picked up two yards before getting taken down. With 27 seconds left and just out of field goal range, Seattle will set up to go for it on fourth down.
4th and 6: From the shotgun, Wilson threw incomplete but a flag came in on the 49ers for a late hit out of bounds. Because it occurred after the play as a dead ball foul, the 49ers will get the ball and lose 15 yards from where they would have gotten it.

San Francisco ball at their own 23 yard line.

1st and 10: Kaepernick kneels and the clock will run out on the half.

Halftime.

Quarter 1

The opening kick went out the back of the end zone.

San Francisco ball at the 15 yard line.

1st and 10: Frank Gore ran off left end for two yards.
2nd and 8: Michael Crabtree caught a short pass over the middle and was immediately wrapped up for just a two yard gain.
3rd and 6: Colin Kaepernick ran a designed QB draw and went right into a Seahawk defender shy of the first down marker. It looked available but he couldn't break free.
4th and 2: David Akers knocked one in from 25 yards away for the first points of the game.

49ers - 3
Seahawks - 0

Jon Baldwin returned the ensuing kick for just a few yards.

Seattle ball at their own 16 yard line.

1st and 10: Play-action from Wilson goes to tight end Zach Miller for a gain of seven.
2nd and 3: Two yard gain for Marshawn Lynch on his first carry of the day.
3rd and 1: Lynch was bottled up behind the line for a loss of a yard. Not a good start for Seattle.
4th and 1: The punt was fair caught by LaMichael James. A flag came down against the 49ers for holding during the kick, pushing them back 10 more yards.

San Francisco ball at their own 19 yard line.

1st and 10: Gore ran off the left side and picked up just a yard.
2nd and 9: Kaepernick ran play-action and got a big 13 yard completion to Vance McDonald out in the flat. He caught it and turned up field to pick up the first down.
1st and 10: Kaepernick on a designed bootleg ran for 17 yards and another first down up to midfield.
1st and 10: Gore up the middle doesn't work at all, losing a yard. Great penetration from Seattle there.
2nd and 11: Kaepernick scrambled for a gain of eight to set up a third and short. No one open it looked like, but he ran quickly.
3rd and 3: On another designed QB draw, Kaepernick went off the edge and picked up two. They're going to go for it on fourth down.
4th and 1: They choose not to go for it, instead punting it down all the way to the one yard line, where it is downed. That was the next best thing other than actually going for it.

Seattle ball at their own 1 yard line.

1st and 10: Lynch carried for eight yards. Either way, San Francisco jumped offsides. They accept the penalty so they can replay the down.
1st and 5: Lynch went up the middle for a gain of three. Not a lot of room to operate here early.
2nd and 2: Lynch went off the left side this time and after a favorable spot was awarded two yards and the first down.
1st and 10: Wilson floated one for Jermaine Kearse but overthrew him. He was open, too.
2nd and 10: Lynch cut it inside off the right side and picked up about four yards to set up another third down for Seattle. They're still deep in their own territory.
3rd and 6: From the shotgun, Wilson just put one over Eric Reid for a big catch and a 22 yard completion.
1st and 10: Play-action deep pass from Wilson is complete but Luke Wilson couldn't hang on after a big hit from Donte Whitner. The hit was flagged for 15 yards.
1st and 10: Lynch on an inside handoff was bottled up after two yards.
2nd and 8: Wilson scrambled and found Lynch, who picked up a first down after the catch. A flag came in, however, and Seattle was penalized for holding, pushing them back 10 yards.
2nd and 18: They run a screen pass to Michael Turbin and he picked up nine yards to make the third down manageable.
3rd and 9: Wilson is sacked by a blitzing Navarro Bowman for a huge loss.

That's the end of the first quarter.
