FINAL: Broncos beat Patriots, 26-16

The AFC Championship Game, which took place today (Sun., Jan. 19, 2014) at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Colorado, is officially in the books and the Denver Broncos defeated the New England Patriots by a final score of 26-16 to advance to Super Bowl 48 in New Jersey.

The game wasn't nearly as close as the final score indicates.

Actually, Denver was dominant throughout, using long, efficient drives to move up and down the field at will. They didn't score on the level they did during the regular season -- 26 was their third lowest total of the year, actually -- but Peyton Manning threw for 400 yards and 2 touchdowns while Knowshon Moreno and Montee Ball chipped in with over 100 yards on the ground to put the game just out of Tom Brady's reach.

Speaking of Brady, he struggled throughout the day, overthrowing receivers and missing on routine routes he's made a living off of being accurate on. Also an issue? LeGarratte Blount, who ran for a Patriots record 166 yards last week, had just 6 yards on 5 carries.

New England's leading rusher was Shane Vereen, who had a total of just 34 yards on the ground.

The Patriots were out-gained by the Broncos on offense, 320-507, gave up two sacks while failing to pressure Manning, and, most importantly, scored 10 fewer points.

That's why the Broncos will now await the winner of the San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks NFC Championship Game in the Super Bowl.

2nd and 10: Vereen found an opening on a draw play and scooted just past the marker for 11 yards.
1st and 10: Collie ran free across the middle of the field and picked up 18 total, most of that after the catch.
1st and 10: Brady found Edelman down to the five yard line.
2nd and 3: Brady kept it himself when he couldn't find a receiver and ran it into the end zone after breaking a tackle. They'll go for two here.

Patriots vs. Broncos live score: Third quarter

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS VS. DENVER BRONCOS, AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Quarter 3

The Broncos will receive the second half kickoff.

The kickoff went out of the end zone for a touchback.

Denver ball at their own 20 yard line.

1st and 10: It's noted before the play that Aqib Talib is still hurt and out of the game. Knowshon Moreno gains just a yard on a run inside.
2nd and 9: Peyton Manning found Eric Decker on a comeback on the outside for a 10 yard gain but multiple flags were thrown on the play. Holding on the offense, pass interference on the offense, and pass interference on the defense. Everything is offset and they repeat the down.
2nd and 9: Play-action pass from Manning is complete to Decker in the same area of the last play, this time successful with no yellow on the field. That went for 18 yards.
1st and 10: Moreno up the middle for six yards.
2nd and 4: DeMaryius Thomas was wide open crossing the middle of the field and he picked up a chunk of yards after the catch. Another first down. That gives him 4 catches for 97 yards on the day.
1st and 10: Montee Ball rushes off the left side and picks up four yards.
2nd and 6: They ran a little hitch to the outside, a screen to Decker and he picked up the first down.
1st and 10: Moreno up the gut gains just three.
2nd and 7: Manning founds Thomas for a short gain on the inside, about four yards. That's 11 completions in a row for Manning and over 100 yards receiving for Thomas.
3rd and 3: They had to burn a timeout before running this play. Manning went to Julius Thomas on a quick inside hitter for the first down. That makes Denver 6/9 on third down today.
1st and 10: Moreno found a hole and cut through for seven yards off the right side.
2nd and 3: Manning went for J. Thomas in the end zone but badly overthrew him.
3rd and 3: Montee Ball got the carry on an inside draw and picked up five. That's an easy first down.
1st and Goal: Manning found D. Thomas for an easy touchdown on an inside slant. They're really racking up the numbers now. The extra point was good.

Broncos - 20
Patriots - 3

The ensuing kickoff went out of the end zone for a touchback.

New England ball at their own 20 yard line.

1st and 10: Tom Brady found Aaron Dobson for a six yard catch on a slant.
2nd and 4: Another quick hitter goes to Shane Vereen but he's stopped short of the first down marker, just a three yard gain.
3rd and 1: Brady, with good protection, slid to the right and found Austin Collie for a big first down.
1st and 10: Steven Ridley cut up the field on an inside run for five yards. Denver linebacker Paris Lennon was injured on the play.
2nd and 5: Danny Amendola dropped a pass over the middle. Looked like he was worried about taking a big shot from a defensive linemen who dropped back in coverage.
3rd and 5: Brady found Collie on the outside for the first down for 12 yards. That takes New England up to the Denver 47 yard line.
1st and 10: They fake an end around to Julian Edelman and throw deep to Dobson on a double move but Brady overshot everyone with the throw. That's happened a lot today.
2nd and 10: Vereen took a handoff on the right side for a tough nine yards.
3rd and 1: Brady quick snapped the ball and went with a QB sneak to get the first down.
1st and 10: Ridley went outside for eight yards on a run off the right.
2nd and 2: Ridley tried to cut back inside but was tripped up at the line of scrimmage.
3rd and 2: Brady found Vereen out of the backfield for what looked to be a first down despite a tipped ball at the line of scrimmage but the running back took a big hit and dropped it. They'll go for it on fourth down here instead of attempting a 47-yard field goal.
4th and 2: Brady was sacked by Terrence Knighton for a turnover on downs. Only two sacks in this game total, both on Brady in big spots to force a field goal attempt on third down and that play just now.

Denver ball at the 39 yard line.

1st and 10: Manning found Ball out of the backfield for a loss of two.
2nd and 12: J. Thomas came out of the backfield and was left alone to catch a quick pass from Manning before turning up field to gain 14 yards.
1st and 10: Manning went for a big throw down the field and D. Thomas made the catch all the way down to the 19 yard line. That's over 300 yards for Manning, over 130 yards for Thomas.
1st and 10: Ball cut up field for 8 yards.

That's the end of the third quarter.

Broncos lead Patriots 13-3 at halftime

The AFC Championship Game, featuring the New England Patriots battling the Denver Broncos today (Sun., Jan. 19, 2014) at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Colorado, is at halftime.

And after two quarters, the Broncos are out to a 13-3 lead.

Both teams started slow, punting on their opening possessions, before Denver got the scoring kicked off with a 27-yard field goal from Matt Prater after a 10-play, 73-yard drive stalled deep in New England territory. In the second quarter, Peyton Manning found his rhythm and piloted a 15-play, 93-yard drive that finished in the end zone in the form of a 1 yard touchdown toss to former Colts teammate Jacob Tamme.

The Patriots answered back with a 9-play, 51-yard drive of their own but a huge sack on third down forced Stephen Gostkowski to bang in a 47-yard field goal for their only points of the half.

The Broncos showed how quickly they can strike on their next drive, moving the ball 63 yards in just 2:29 to put three more points on the board before the half ended.

Quick stats breakdown on the match-up between Brady and Manning:

T. Brady: 9/15, 114 yards
P. Manning: 18/25, 214 yards, 1 TD

Patriots vs. Broncos live score: Second quarter

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS VS. DENVER BRONCOS, AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Quarter 2

The Patriots have the ball at the Denver 39 yard line.

4th and 16: New England punted it after faking like they would go for it and pinned the Broncos deep in their own territory.

Denver ball at their own seven yard line.

1st and 10: Knowshon Moreno found some room off the left side and gained 11 yards.
1st and 10: Another run, this time up the gut, went for just a yard.
2nd and 9: Despite heavy pressure, Peyton Manning threw a nice pass to DeMaryius Thomas over the middle but it hit him in the chest and fell incomplete. Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib was injured on the play.
3rd and 9: Manning floated a pass to Wes Welker between two defenders for 14 yards and a first down. The pocket was collapsing on him and that was an incredibly tight pass.
1st and 10: With all day to throw, Manning found Julius Thomas on a delayed route to flat for a short gain.
2nd and 8: Virgil Green, a back up tight end, carried the ball and picked up seven yards.
3rd and 1: They went empty backfield and tried to hit Eric Decker on a short route to the flat. There was holding on the defense, however, and that gave Denver a free five yards and a first down.
1st and 10: Moreno picked up three yards on the run.
2nd and 7: Montee Ball came in the game and picked up a first down with a 12 yard catch out of the backfield for another first down.
1st and 10: Decker had his hands on a pass on the outside edge near the marker but dropped it.
2nd and 10: Manning couldn't find Welker on a short crossing pattern. Incomplete.
3rd and 10: Moreno got the ball on a draw play and he broke a big run by hopping over defenders all the way down to the 11 yard line. That's a 28 yard run. Huge play that will be on all the highlight reels.
1st and 10: Ball came in and ran up the middle to the one yard line.
2nd and 1: In the hurry up, Manning went with a carry to Ball to the left and he found no room.
3rd and 1: Another run to Ball off the left side gained just enough for the first down.
1st and Goal: Hurry up offense, Manning went play-action and found a wide open Jacob Tamme for the touchdown. The extra point was good.

Broncos - 10
Patriots - 0

Another touchback.

New England ball at their own 20 yard line.

1st and 10: Play-action deep ball went to Aaron Dobson for a big 27 yard gain to the 47 yard line.
1st and 10: LeGarrette Blount found little room off the right side, gaining just three yards.
2nd and 7: Brady found Shane Vereen for a big play, 13 yards and a first down on a screen play.
1st and 10: Blount off the right side for a two yard gain.
2nd and 8: Brady brought it down and found a guy with a crazy long name for a first down. Not even going to try to type that. They're at the 20 now.
1st and 10: Terrence Knighton plugs a hole and Blount fails to gain any yardage. Shaun Phillips was injured on the play.
2nd and 10: Brady found Edelman on a crossing route. He looked to have some room to operate but had his legs taken out from under him after a gain of just two yards. The Patriots were forced to take a timeout after this play.
3rd and 8: From the shotgun, Brady was pressured and sacked by Robert Ayers all the way back at the 29 yard line. There was simply no time to let the receiver's routes develop.
4th and 19: Stephen Gostkowski drilled a field goal from 47 yards out.

Broncos - 10
Patriots - 3

The kickoff goes out of the end zone for a touchback.

Denver ball at their own 20 yard line.

1st and 10: Moreno is hit behind the line and goes down after a loss of a yard.
2nd and 11: A fake to Moreno led to Manning finding Welker off the left side for a first down. Well, it would have had Denver not been called for holding on the play. That's a nine yard penalty and a re-play of the down.
2nd and 20: Manning found Thomas for a big play out to the 38 yard line off a play-action fake. That one went for 26 yards. We're under two minutes now.
1st and 10: Manning found Thomas for yet another big gain, this one  for 27 and all the way down to the Patriots 36 yard line. Just like that, two plays and they're threatening to score again.
1st and 10: Now it's Caldwell getting in on the action, as he catches one for 11 yards and another first down.
1st and 10: Ball comes out of the backfield for a short gain, maybe three yards, but he's out of bounds to stop the clock at 47 seconds.
2nd and 7: Devin McCourty was all over a short route to Wes Welker off the right side and made a great tackle after just a two yard completion.
3rd and 5: Manning found Moreno out of the backfield for four yards, just shy of the first down. Decision time. They call timeout to get a chance to think about it. Instead of going for it with one timeout left, they decide to attempt a field goal.
4th and 1: From 35 yards out, Prater knocked it through.

Broncos - 13
Patriots - 3

The kickoff went out of the back of the end zone. Touchback.

New England ball at their own 20 yard line.

1st and 10: With 25 seconds to go in the half and two timeouts, the Patriots went with a Brady pass from the shotgun that fell incomplete, over the head of Edelman.
2nd and 10: Another pass from Brady was knocked away but Denver was flagged for offsides on the play. That's a five yard penalty and a repeat of the down. The game clock, however, is down to 16 seconds left in the half.
2nd and 5: Brady went deep for Austin Collie but the pass went over his head. He beat his man, too. Just a poor throw from the QB.
3rd and 5: A draw play to Vereen went for five yards.

That ends the first half.

2nd and 4: A hand-off to Blount gains only a yard crashing inside the tackles. Denver won at the point of attack on that one.
3rd and 3: Brady, from the shotgun, went long for Matthew Slater but the coverage was outstanding. Tony Carter knocked it away in the air.
4th and 3: The punt traveled 55 yards and was fair caught by Decker.

2nd and 10: A five yard run from Steven Ridley makes the next down manageable.
3rd and 5: Brady hits Edelman on a deep comeback route for 18 yards and the first down.
1st and 10: Nowhere to go for Ridley, as he's knocked down for no gain.
2nd and 10: Off play-action, Brady missed Edelman on the outside.
3rd and 10: Brady found Danny Amendola across the middle for eight yards, but that's short of the marker. A flag did come in and was for pass interference on the offense. That's a 10 yard penalty and a re-play of the down. Broncos cornerback Rodgers-Cromartie was injured on the play.
3rd and 20: All the way back at the 43 yard line, Brady found Edelman on a screen for a four yard gain.
