I haven't seen anyone else talking about this yet, although I haven't waded through the thousands of comments on the live feed. Either way, here's a place to contribute your thoughts on his performance.
I was blown away by this kid and so was Alptekin Ozkilic
. Entering the Octagon for the first time is often a nerve rattling experience, even for veteran fighters. Smolka stepped up on the big stage and did it with poise. Cool, calm, and collected? Not exactly, Smolka was on fire from the opening and was landing all sorts of shots. I was wondering if he'd be able to continue at this pace and also if he was going to wilt under the pressure of Ozkilic's wrestling after being taken down a few times. The Hawaiian, however, showed some great defensive wrestling and sweeps and never really seemed in trouble.
Somewhere in the 1st, he secured the Thai clinch and started landing vicious knees to the body. At this point, the bout's momentum clearly began to turn against Smolka's highly favored opponent. As the match continued through the 2nd and 3rd rounds, Smolka seemed to crank up his offense even more with blistering kicks and well timed standing elbows. When the final bell rang, the hawaiian lion(idk, the kid needs a nickname and I refuse to use any name that starts with "Da") was in full mount and raining down punches mercilessly. I would've liked to see a little more killer instinct there at the end, but I also felt like he was super close to earning the stoppage. Exciting fight!
For a kid that's only 22 years old, color me impressed. Flyweight
is in need of some contenders and while I'd hate to see him thrown to the wolves immediately...i think this young man has earned a pretty significant step up in competition. Now it's your turn, what did you think of Louis Smolka
and who should he fight next?
